County Agenfs Column 0 ■ .... I The harried householder who battles mosquitoes around hl* home now has a new chemical helper,. r says Glen Lehker, Purdue Universltr entomologist Dieldrin, a chlorinated compound related to DDT, is the chemical. It can be - used tor spraying shrubbery, tree trunks, porch ceilings, screens, and other mosquito resting places. It la likewise effective for spraying upon stagnant water to destroy mosquito larvae or “wigglers." Dieldrin is best purchased as a 15 percent liquid concentrate which mast be diluted with water before It is used. “To make a mosquito spray add 7 tablespoonfuls of this concentrate to gallon of water. This amount is enough for treating about 8,000 square fest < or an average sized city lot," Lehker reports. Dieldrin can be harmful to human s if not properly used. It will also kill fish. It is important, therefore, to follow directions on the package. Additional relief can be obtained by getting rid of receptacles containing water, such as tin cans and old tires. It is surprising how many mosquitoes can develop in a can full of water, Lehker says. He adds that the newer mosquito and insect repellents such as Rutgers 6-12 and Indalone for rubbing on the skin are surprising effective and should be given a trial. EMBEZZLEMENT (Continned from Page One) Indictments for embezzlement), forgery and operating a confidence game against Hodge, who has been "making a clean breast” about the “huge conspiracy.” The state’s attorney went to work on the Indictment after quizzing Hodge ii a three-hour "tellall” session. When the meeting broke up, Contrakon told reporters. "This is a huge conspiracy — I can see that now. There is a lot es mopey involved.” Contrakon said he had learned . pt four new 'qusetjfnsMe cheeks’ amounting to $161,709. Earltfer. attorney general Latham Castle estimated checks worth $890,000 were involved in the scandal. Contrakon’s report boosted the totai to $901,709. 7 - . . i “I’m sure there are a lot more warrants missing than the 47 already involved,” Coutrakon said. If true, this would push the sum over the $1 million level. If yin have someHdng v - sell a rooms tor rent, tty a Democr* Want Ad. B brings results.

S. marine recruit training dpot to come forward and say so,- the response was a deluge of telegrams and telephone calls that tied up the switchboards. How many of these volunteer witnesses will be usable is a debatable question. Many of the communications were expressions ' of sympathy for McKeon. The 81-year-old veteran marine from Worcester, Mass., took what the defense contends was a "laggard” platoon into a salt, creek on a Sunday night march last April ‘ 8. Some were non-swimmers. The outfie panicked and six drowned. McKeon said he was trying to teach the platoon discipline. He is charged with manslaughter, oppressing troops, and disobeying orders. last charge ic comprised of two drinkidg accusations—imbibing on the day of the march in single men’s barracks and in the presence of a recruit. .. 4 The defense contends Mcjflbon is a victim of marine .training practices which havfe tnafie the corps great in combat — that it was not an unusual practice for a drill instructor to march trainees into marshes and streams to improve discipline and morale and foster interdependence of the men in the fighting units. A former marine 4, b00t” testified Friday that McKeon had told the ill-fated platoon 71that ‘ionswimmers would drown and sharks would devour the rest betore ordering them tut© the ebbing waters of Ribbon Creek. Pvt. Melvin Barber, 18, a sixfoot New York negro, told the COUtt: , "The sergeant (McKeon) told us we were going to the swamps and those who couldn’t' swim would drown and those, that could would be eaten by sharks."
