«B — >— —I. ... Ford, Snead Are Favored To Win PGA CANTON, Mass. (UP) — Defending champion Doug Ford and Sam Snead, a three-time winner of the title, were co-favored at 3-1 today to win the PGA golf championship as the field of 127 pro teed off for the first of nine rounds of match play. • Although both of them have been scrambling in practice rounds, their fellow pros agreed they were the ones to beat, because the 6,634 yard Blue Hill Country Club course is suited to their game. But like the golfers who picked them, Ford and Snead were critical of the course, complaining especially of the condition of the fairways. They agreed that it was one of the moat poorly — conditioned courses over which a major championship ever has been decided. Snead expressed the general opinion when a club member asked him what he thought of the course. "Wbat course?" Snead asked. Then turning aside to his playing partners, here marked.' “How could anyone call thlS a course?” Even so, Snead, who said an old injury to bis left hand no longer

I Todo/s Sport Parade | (Reg. U. «. Pat- Office) By OMAR FRALIY (United Press Sports Writer) CANTON, Mass. (UP) — Rocky Marciano, the man who threw the heavyweight champloMhlp of the world on the open market, leaned today toward ancient Archie Moore as the man who will succeed him as the ruler of the ring. The “'Rock” won’t make an out-and-out prediction. But you gather, as you talk to him, that he feels old Archie knows too many tricks for Floyd Patterson, the 81-year-old challenger with the atomizing punch. Rocky hinted at this leaning toward Moore as he joined the "hackers" watching the professionals getting ready for today’s start of the PGA golf championship. ““I’d rather be able to play good golf right now than be able to beat either Moore or Patterson,” gyinned the man who retired undefeated. “Right now I’m a real hacker but I hope to be able to play real well some day.” The man from nearby Brockton doesn’t think that day will come real soon. For he is suffering rather acutely from a ruptured spinal disc and his movements are restricted by a “corset” which encompasses his whole midsection. But as he comfortably followed the stars around the course in an electric golf cart, Mariano gave a careful analysis of the two men who figure to meet in September for his abandoned title. “Os course,” Marciano cautioned, "Moore first must get past James J. Parker in their fight at Toronto next week. It might not be too easy, either, because that Parker used to work out with me and he hag a terrific right hand punch. If he sneaks one over, that could be all for Archie. “But certainly Moore figures to win this one, primarily because it is so important to him and he’ll be real careful," Mavciano added. ..Which is all that stands between the signing of a PattersonMoore bout in September. “That fight, if it comes off, should be a dandy,” Marciano enthused. "You have to like Patterson because of his youth and his punch. But you also have to like Moore because of his great experience and the fact that he knows all- the-.tricks of the trade.” Marciano rubbed his jaw reflectively as he added that "Moore can punch pretty good, too.** For Moore had Marciano on the deck before the retired champion came back to stop old Archie. “One thing Is sure*, though,” the Rock said as he commuted stylishly over the sun-swept fairways, “I’m glad all that is behind me now. It’s just great being home with my family all the time or will be if I don’t have to have an operation on this back.“The only thing I’ll fight from now on,” he laughed. “Is that doggone slice I’ve developed.” Pony League Stars To Play Exhibition The Pony League All-Stars will play an exhibition game with the Decatur Junior American Legion team Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Worthman field. Adcock Pacing Braves' Drive Toward Pennant By JOHN GRIFFIN (U al ted Press Sports Writer) Some baseball “experts" mock big Joe Adcock as a “guess hitter,” but he’s guessing so well these days that he ought to be on on of those television quis shows. The six-foot, four-inch Milwaukee slugger put on another of his home run sprees Thursday with a grand slam homer, a three - run homer, and two more hits for a toted of eight ruus-batted-in in a 13-3 rout of the New York Giants. The victory enabled the Braves to retain their two-game National League lead over the Cincinnati Redlegs, who drubbed Brooklyn at night, 7-2. Whether or not Adcock really guesses what each pitch will be, there’s no denying he’s the hottest slugger in the majors. His total of 19 home runs includes 10 in the last 13 games, a period in which he drove in a total of 23 runs. And the Braves won 11 of those 13 games to take over the league lead. - Adcock. who literally chased Giant pitcher Ruben Gomez out of the park Tuesday after being hit by a pitch, chased Giant starter Jim Hearn in the first inning with his 400-foot grand-slam homer. He added his three-run homer in the sixth off Dick Littlefield. He doubled In the third and singled home a run in the fourth. His eight RBls were a single-game high in the National League this year. Ed Mathews drove in three of the Braves’ other runs and Warren Spahn breezed to his ninth win for the league leaders with an eight-hitter. —“ The Redlegs, trailing 2-1 after Gil Hodges hit bls 20th homer in the sixth, went ahead in the same frame on Gus Bell’s 18th circuit blow with one on and wrapped it up with four in the seventh. Hal Jeffcoat won over Sal Maglle In a pitching duel. In the only other NL game. Dee Fondy’s homqr with two out in the 10th inning gave Chicago a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. • Jim King and Walt - Moryn also homered for the Cubs and Gran Hamner for the Phils. Turk Low-n won in relief, his second win in three days. In the American League, the New York Yankees stretched their runaway league lead to games with a 7-3 victory over Detroit when second-place Cleveland lost to Washington, 5-4, on Eddie Yost’s second homer of the game with two out in the ninth inning. The Yankees, tied, 3-3, erupted for four runs in the sixth to win as Hank Bauer's bases - loaded double highlighted the rally. Tommy Byrne gained his fifth win with relief help from Tom Morgan. Cleveland blew a 4-0 lead in losing to Washington as Bunky Stewart stopped" them with two hit pitching in 7 1-3 relief innings. The Chicago White Sox at last ended their 11-game losing streak as southpaw BRly Pierce scattered six hits and fanned nine to nip Baltimore, 3-2. It was Pierce’s 14th victory, tying him with Johnny Kucks of the Yankees, for top winning honors in the majors, and his 12th complete game. The Kansas City A's downed the Boston Red Sox, 8-4. as Vic Power, idle seven games because of dental trouble, came back to lead the way with a three - run homer. The win snapped the A's four-gkme losing streak. r ~MiN6R~\ AMERICAN ASSOCIATION W. L. Pct. G.B.
