1957 Wheat Support Price Fixed At $2 Price Set Provided Quotas Are Approved Oscar T. Brown, chairman of the Adams county agricultural stabilization and conservation committe has received notification that the secretary of agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson, has announced that the national average wheat price support for 1957 production, if quotas are approved in the July 20 referendum, will be $2 per bushel. If quotas are not approved, the available support level under legislative provisions win be at 50 percent of parity, or about 81.21 cents a bushel on the basis of current parity estimates. These national average support levels will be available In commercial wheat states for those who comply with their individual farm acreage allotments. Support rates in the 12 non-commercial wheat states, where there are no allotments, are set by law at levels representing 75 percent of the rates for commercial areas. National average wheat price support rates for 1956 production, as announced by the department April 23, are at $2 per bushel, the same level which is being continued for 1957. Under the formula of the controlling legislation, and on the basis of the department’s supply estimates, the indicated minimum national average wheat price support for 1957 would be at 77 percent of parity. On the basis of the June 15 parity estimate of $2.42 per bushel, the support level would be about $ 1.86 a bushel. However, the secretary is continuing the support for 1957 a $2 per bnshel under his discretionary authority. > Commenting on today’s announcement, secretary Benson said, “I am glad that the factors affecting the wheat situation make it possible to hold price supports at higher levels than the minimum indicated by the legislative provisions. “it has been possible in increase wheat exports, through aggressive use of the special, authorizations congress made available. The soil bank, through both its acreage reserve and conservation reserve programs, opens the way for very substantial production adjustments ta'llwyesfrr immediately ahead. We have turned -the corner and expect to start making steady reductions in the huge wheat surplus.” The determination that minimum wheat support levels for

1957 production would be at 77 percent of parity under the legislative formula is based on an estimated "normal supply” of 1 billion, 140 million bushels for the 1957-58 marketing year which begins July 1, 1957. This normal supply estimate includes estimated 1956-57 domestic utilization of 650 million bushels; estimated 1957-58 exports of 300 million bushels; and a 20 percent allowance for carryover reserves of 190 million bushels. * The actual total supply estimated to be available for the 1957-58 year is 1 billoin, 668 million bushels, including an estimated carryover of 995 million bushels July 1, 1957; 1957 production of 668 million bushels (reflecting 1 fully effective soil bank operations for that year); and imports of 5 million bushels. Tris estimated mat z 25 million bushels of wueat will still be in the wheat set-aside. Set-aside wheat is not counted in calculating price support levels. Deducting the 225 million bushels from tue 1 billion, 668 million bushels in the actual supply estimate leaves 1 billion 443 million bushels as the supply level for determininug price supports. This total is 126 percent of the determined “normal supply” level, and under the legislative formula would call for minimum supports tor 1957 wheat At Tl percent of parity. Under the controlling legislation. price supports for wheat are to be established within a range of 75 and 90 percent of parity. P The riatlVnal-average price support of $2 per bushel for 1956-crop wheat represents approximately 82% percent of current parity. 18 POLIO CASES (Continued From rage One) the highest incidence sent a plea to Daley to ask aid from fifth army headquarters in lending its staff and personnel to work in the neighboor.

(Former Berne Pastor Is Taken By Death The Rev. Noah J. Schmucker, 72, pastor of the Evangelical Mennonite church west of Berne from 1935 until 1951, died Monday at a hospital in Hutchinson, Kan., following a heart attack. Mrs. Oelberg also stated that blood is no longer kept at the participating hospitals which includes the Adams county memorial hospital, but at the Fort Wayne blood bank. A low supply makes the new system necessary in order that the blood will be available to the hospitals on demand. The work of scheduling blood donors for the July 80 visit will begin next week with volunteer workers assisting. A large number of possible donors must be scheduled since during the hot weather many persons are unable to give blood.
