Russians May Win Race On Missiles Warning Is Issued By Trevor Gardner WASHINGTON 4 UP) — Former air force research chief TreVor Gardner has warned that Russia may® win the race to develop a . 1.500-tnile ballistics missile hecathse of competition among the I*. S. armed forces. He also said Russia may have developed tanker planes that, would enable the jßeds to deliver atomic or hydrogen bombs to the U. 8. ‘ heartland" now-. Gardner quit as assistant air force secretary for research and ’development last February, because he didn't think the administration was devoting enough money and effort to that field. His testimony before the senate air power subcommittee, given last month and subjected to defense department censorship, was made public Monday . night. Gardner said Russia already may have a missile with a range of 700 to 800 miles. Thia country’s current longest - range ballistic* missile is the Redstone, which has a 500-mile range. He said there is no question in his mind the Reds are ahead of this country in developing a 1,600mile ballistics missile. This is the so-called intermediate range ballistics missile (IRBMI, fired like

He said the army, navy and air force are carrying on about 16 or 20 ballistic projects which compete with one another for scarce engineers and equipment. ~ Gardner said he believes the United States is ahead of Russia on the intercnotinental ballistics missile (IBM), sometimes called the “ultimate weapon” because it presumably can strike targets 5,000 miles away w-ithout warning and with no presently known defense. ’ He attributed this to the U. S. decision to develop the IBM in "one jump” rather than “step by step with the methodical German, approach" as apparently have. ..The nations steel-making capacity has increased 40 per cent in the past 10 years and 1955 production was 117 million tons, an increase of 76 per cent over 1946.
