■ yawl II ■■■■ I. meie ■■■■■■■— It has been said that there were just as many reckless drivers W years ago, but they were driving something that had more sene* than they had. A—« While most of ue subscribe to the theory that a community shall govern itself, there are areas wherein national interference is accepted with reservations. There is a greaj amount of discussion of the issue of integration and it is safe to assume that many of you have taken sides. Irregardless of the merits of the arguments tor and against this particular issue, far more important to many of us is the question of states rights. Should we come to the day of federal aid to education, isn’t it safe to anticipate further interference with the functions of local government? The excuse is that we live in a more involved society at present and therefore require extensive intervention by federal authority. Moro than likely the answer lies in the fact that we are more than anxious for handouts and must bring ourselves to accept regulatory actions from Washington. Some suggest that we are not able to determine that which is best tor us, asking for Uncle Sam to make decisions for our best interests. It would appear that we get the treatment for which we ask, let’s put the blame where it belongs, here in the grass roots. —-0 o The National league io rapidly evening some old scores with the American league. For many years It was thought that the sluggers r were to be found in the junior circuit but id winning the last five out of six games, the balance of power has moved to the . other group, commonly called the National League. From the looks of some of those brawny young men, the American “banjo" hitters lack the crowd appeal of Ruth, Gehrig and Foxx. Presume the World Series will be decided in a similar fashion. • ■

Tax Exemptions To Indian Landowners Thousands To Gain Tax Exemptions WASHINGTON (UP) -r The bureau of Indian affairs said today thousands of Indian landowners will be given income tax exemptions under a recent ruling by the internal revenue service. The ruling exempts taxes on direct income derived on Indian lands held in trust by the federal government- under an act of 1887. This includes more than 100,000 tracts totaling about 13 million acres. j The 1887 act chopped up Indian reservations for individual ownership. The intent of the statute was to hold the land in trust for 26 years and then turn it over entirely to the Indians. However, the trust period has been extended several times. The internal jfivenue service ruling exempts frbm taxes rentals from the land, royalties received from minerals, and income received from crops and gracing. The IRS ruling was based upon a decision by the supreme court. Indian commissioner Glenn L. Em-' mona said he could not estimate how much the decision would cost the government in taxes.
