Call On Wilson Halt Scrap Os Army, Air Force House Committee Urges Secretacy To End Wasteful Fight WASHINGTON (UP) — The house appropriations committee today called on defense secretary Charles E. Wilson to take immediate steps to hai't a wasteful fight between the army and the air force over ground-to-air guided missiles. “It appears that the taxpayer will be the principal loser in such a quarrel." the committee said in a report approving f 1.400.000,000 in new. funds for military construction. “It is the responsibility of the secretary of defense to see that funds and efforts are not wasted iu useless competitive rivalry between the services." the committee said. The military construction money was included in a catch-all supplemental appropriation bill providing, all told $1,555,535,425 for a variety of government functions during the fiscal year that began Sunday. This was $332,685,900 more than the President had' requested. Army funds approved by jhe committee included $136,900,000 for tactical facilities, mostly Nike. The committee said it was not barring funds for the air force's Talos projects, but was leaving them to^ be funded later if necessary after the army-air force fight is resolved.
The committee approved the administration's request for $1,228,-. 000.000 in new appropriations as, a step toward an air force building program of $1,600,000,000, cutting less than $17,000,000 from specific projects. The air force cuts- include $2.500,000 requested for construction of a hospital at the Lincoln. Neb.. AirPc'"? Base.
