CITY'S CRITICAL < Co»n»!»ej| from <>■«• The yearly average for all three is slightly higher. In 3955 the cost per KW averagdd .0098 for Auburn. .0095 for Columbia City and .0097 for Garrett. Decatur’s average cost per KW purchased during the month of December. 1955, as was pointed out in a previous article, would have been .00950 on an 8,000 KW demand contract and .00906 on a 7,200 KW maximum <temand schedule. For the entlie year of 1965 Decatur’s average would have been an estimated .00928,. the lowest of the three comparable cities. These articles have pointed up two obvious facts—that it would be considerably cheaper to purchase power rather than to generate it and that the cost of added equipment necessary for purchased power would be much less than the eost of expanding either of $e two generating plants owned by the city. j In view of these facts It is expected that officials will take action to alleviate the critical power situation by purchasing power from Indiana Michigan rather than by trying at the present time to expand, the city’s equipment. It is expected that this action will be determined at the next regular council meeting which is Tuesday night It mtist be kept in mind that the study of this problem has been conducted over a period of five months and Tuesday night’s decision, although designed to provide an immediate remedy to the power problem, will by no means be a hasty, emergency decision. AuMsqipted out in a previous ajv tide, equipment at the steam generating plant pn Third street is in bad repair and might possibly go out of operation at any time, causing an acute power shortage. This situation is expected to be remedied immediately by Tuesday’s council action. Owl Tangled Up BLOOMINGTON, Hi. WORLD'S WORST (Continuy| From rage One) 4,500 feet up virtually sheer Temple Butte and "only on an outaide chance’’ could it be reached even by expert mountainears. Witnesses who probed the seen* of the TWA ruins said it was only barely possible bodies could be identified by fingerprints. All are badly charred. The site was only 12 miles from the world - famous Indian Watch Tower, on the rim of the canyon where millions of tourists have scanned With awe the grandeur of the technicolor sandstone and granite bdttes and cliffs. But it was not visible from the tourist spots because of intervening buttes. ~ VIRTUALLY ALL (Continued trom Pnye One) malned on the sidelines awaiting ah invitation trom either side to step in. White House news secretary James C. Hagerty said Sunday* at Gettysburg, Pa., that President Eisenhower had no plans th intervene in the strike and that labor secretary James P. Mitchell stated the administration’s position last Friday. Mitchell said then the government had no intention of applying for a strike-delaying TaftHartley injunction. Finnegan took the Initiative Sunday by telephoning Arthur Goldberg, USW general counsel. He then announced he would eontact McDonald and Stephens, probably by < telephone today. McDonald told newsmen that the union had not sought Finnegan’s intervention, nor that of any other govrenment agency. Before leaving New York Sunday. McDonald received a vote of full support from the union’s 170man wage policy committee, the USW’s top authority on contract negotiations. The committeemen backed his rejection of the industry’S’ offer of a five-year, no strike contract providing annual wage boosts which they said averaged 7.3 cents per hour P er lnan - The pre-strike average wage was 52.46 as hour. The committee accused the companies of “arrogantly" attempting to force an “inadequate” contract on the union and declared “we stand solidly together to achieve a just and fair agreement.’’ H you have aomeming *- sen er rooms for rent, try a Democrtf Want Ad. * brings result*.
