The nomination of Severin H. Schurger. Decatur attorney, for the Appellate Court, came ab no surprise to his many supporters In Decatur and Adama County. Mr. Schurger made the same race two years ago and led the ticket in our district. He is well qualified for the office which he seeks and will add much to the entire Democratic ticket in November. We join with his many, friends and supporters in congratulations and best wishes for success in the 1956 campaign. ———o o— One of the interesting sidelights of the recent Democratic convention was the appearance of Jay De Voss on the floor of the convention. Jay. the son of Delegate and Mrs. John DeVoss, is being indoctrinated early in the manners and methods of party politics. He will no doubt be able to add much to class discussions as a result of his convention experiences. - o e While road improvement is imperative we wonder again at the method of financing. On July 1. 1956. an added federal tax of one cent per gallon of gas goes into effect Beginning in 1923 with the first state tax of two cents per gallon, today we find a total of seven cents being placed upon each gallon that is purchased. With prevailing prices in .this area, that means almost 25% tax upon each gallon of gasoline purchased by the motorists. We feel that those of us who use the highways should pay for them and their improvements, yet the interchange of monies to and from Washington just ean't make good wßueezfcetitsnol forget that 2WT horsepower autos create some of this demand for highway expenditures. A few more speeding and “drag strips” might be built for less to provide a chance for the heavy-footed to get their thrills. Yes, we do need more and better highways btrt more efficient means of collecting funds and distributing them would and should come; some replacement of horse power with horse sense, seems to be in order, too.

Did you check ydur driving manners today? Did you thank or compliment someone for an act of auto courtesy? Take s" bit longer to get to and from — make the streets and highways safer for you and yours. Drive slowly—drive carefully! o 0 c While the aerodynamists insist that the bumblebee can't fly so have some economists insisted . that business cannot continue at Its present high level. Recording to Steel magazine, the pro d action of steel, which is basic for most industry, Is expected to continue to rise. Two-thirds of the experts now predict a rise in the 1956 volume over 1955. A continued shortage of skilled labor, increased manufacturing costs, and expansion of production all would seem to indicate a continuation of our present high rate of prosperity. Os course, present wage negotiations need to be successfully concluded and it is likely that they will in the near future. The engineers equations may be scientifically correct, but the bumblebee still flies. — — The close of the Democratic state convention Tuesday with the nomination of Claude Wickard for United States Senator and Ralph Tucker for Governor makes for a great campaign this fall. Mr. Wickard with a breadth of experience that includes Secretary of Agriculture. Agricultural Adjustment Administration. aS well as other responsible positions, will provide formidable opposition for the Republican choice which will be made later this week. Mayor Tucker, one of a large family of orphan child rem. has made his mark as administrator of -Terre Haute and a labor mediator. He too. will contribute to the ticket in its bid to unseat a Republican administration in Indiana. Both Tucker and Wickard appeared in Decatur recently and left very favorable ini pres- • sions upon those who were able to hear them. We salute that which appears to be a ticket of the delegates knowing full well that the American Way can continue only with our two party system. ”
