Historical Treasure Trove Is Uncovered Documents Left In Vault Many Years CHICAGO (UP) — A Lincoln scholar said today he has hit a million-doliar jackpot ot ‘‘lost” Revolutionary and Civil War letters and documents. The forgotten historical treasure trove, left to gather dust in a bank vault for years, includes letters written by George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. The Lincbln scholar, Ralph G. Newman, said he acquired the collection "for a very substantial sum of money” from Mrs. Wiley R. Reynolds of Palm Beach, Fla., widow- of a former Michigan industrialist and Florida bank owner who died in 1948. Reynolds, in turn, had bought the collection in 1946 from Dr. Ellsworth Eliot Jr., New York physician and surgeon. Eliot bad spent 50 years gathering the collection, but his fellow collectors never guessed its value, Newman said. Reynolds became ill and died before he could examine the collection. It stayed in bank vaults until Newman got a chance to see it early this year. He said the collection “rivals some of the'major institutional collections” and. with "some material 1 have which supplements it,” has a retail value of “possibly a million dollars.” “They’re all here —a fabulous cast.” Newman said. “Over 50 George Washington letters, 30 by John Adams, a large collection by Lincoln, letters by Lee, Grant, Stonewall Jackson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Paul Jones, John Hancock, Alexander Hamil(on, Generals Sherman and Sheridan. Lafayette.” Items in the collection of more than 2,000 documents include:* A letter from Thomas Paine to Washington accusing him of “connivance at /ny imprisonment” in a French prison. The original message telling how Gen. Ulysses S. Grant should conduct surrender negotiations with Gen. Robert E. Lea at the close of the Civil War. The message is signed by secretary of war Edwin M. Stanton, but “was actually written by Abraham Lincoln who obviously dictated the entire terms,” Newman said. The copy of Lee's general order No. 9 surrendering his southern army. MILLER TO WED (C'oattaard from Page Ow*> support a cause or movement that was dominated by Communists.” “Did you at that time?” broke in chairman Francis P. Walter (D-Pa.) “I did, yes,” Miller replied.
