With the announcement from Worthman Field that SO boys are active in the recreation baseball league we find that about 190 boys up to 17 years of ago are participating fn baseball this summer. Add that to the hundreds of youngsters at the swimming pool, on the various playgrounds, at the Community Center each night, and we find most of our young people active this summer. The summer months give them such a wide variety of opportunities and that Decatur continues to provide excellent facilities and leadership for the boys and girls. 0 0 "Our Sunday Visitor" recently carried the story that the American Legion will send an all-star Junior American Legion team to Cuba on a good-will tour. The paper commended the action of the Legion but reminded that those Cubans will give a lot of competition. The team is to be chosen from the Indianapolis area and will spend several weeks on this tour. This is another step in the direction of improving understanding in this hemisphere where our prime interests seem ' to be. 0 0 The current solicitation tor funds to provide an electric scoreboard at Worthman Field is progressing. More than half the needed funds have been subscribed and the men who are doing the job of soliciting hope the goal can be reached by the end of the week. It is a worthwhile project and merits the support of all yon baseball and football fans for the hoasds-are bo designed to provide pertinent information as each game progresses. If yon have not yet done so, send your contribution to Herman Krueckeberg at the First State Bank. 0 0 A vast amount of controversy has arisen over the inadequacies of our ability to train scientist*. While we have more than doubled our number of trained engineers since 1920. Russia has increased her supply ten-fold. It has been found that physics is not offered on the curriculum of 53% of our high schools, and chemistry is taught in only half of the nations secondary schools. In opr highly

mechanised age of peace and war machinery we do need more trained men to operate them. It is a pleasure to note that all high school students Ip Decatur have chemistry and physics available to them and wo suspect that, our schools furnish more than their fair share of scientifically minded graduates. A singular honor to 0, M. MeGeath, director of the Decatur Youth and Community eenter, is indicated by his appointment to attend the Institute in Recreation Administration at the International Recreation Congress. Mr. McGeath is one of 50 who were admitted from more than SOO applicant* It becomes more evident to us that we have an outstanding leader in recreation when we consider that he was accepted for this conference. Congratulations, Mac, we are happy that you have an opportunity to attend the event, f 0 0 Boats for hire, nice string of bass and bluegills, picnic grounds, ice-skating and even swimming could become realities for us, with the tremendous potential of the St Marys River. True, a look at It now is a* ter cry from the above but the next generation will wonder at why we put up with the present stream. A few years ago there were snickers when the Homestead was talked about; a few years ago laughs were numerous when the late M. F. Worthman ta|ked of an athletic field; fewer years ago mirth was abundant when the Schmitt term was Planned for a residential area; still more recently "who ever heard of a dump for building a community center?” Such recollections should indicate that little or nothing is impossible for our community. All these ideas came from a recent discussion among and, even though they were apprrised of the obstacles to such an achievement, they seemed willing and ready to do their part. The exhuberance and impetuosity of fouth is .oft-times the fore-runner of distinct accomplishments. Talk with them, give them a chance to be heard and it will be learned that “Elvis Presley” isn't the only thing about which they talk.

CHAPTER 24 ■f ATER THAT same night Vai Li was with Dirk in Bryce's surjery. The formalities of death were >ver and Mrs. Featherstone’s body aad been taken down by two orderlies to the ship s hospital ward. Vai had changed back into her uniform, but Dirk was still in costume. That he.pbould still be in fancy costume gave a bizarre touch to the scene. Vai was sitting on the edge of a chair, as though she were afraid to relax She was drooping not only with weariness but with an aching sense of guilt and misery. Bruce was speaking quietly. “But when you saw the condition of your patient why didn’t you call me at once?” He was seated in the chair before his desk, and his manner though professional was not unsympathetic. "I’m sorry, Doctor. I didn’t realize how serious her condition was until toward the end. I was going for you, but it was too late." Despite all her hospital experience she never failed to feel shocked in the presence of death, and this time she had an aching sense of pity as well “But it might not have been too late if you’d called me earlier." “I didn’t think she had sent for me because she was ill. I thought she’d sent for me for another reason.” "You mean when you came into the cabin she seemed perfectly all right, her pulse was normal, her color healthy?” ”1 didn’t take her pulse, and if I thought her color unhealthy, I put that down to the temper she was in,” she said slowly. “She was in a temper? You think that may have brought oa the heart attack?” he asked sharply. She looked away from him, biting her lower lip. “J think it may have, Doctor." The awful feeling of guilt rushed over her again. Had she been the unwitting cause at her patient's death?" “But surely, knowing that your patient had a heart condition, you should have done what you could

to soothe her," But he still spoke gently. “I —I suppose I should have,” she admitted. "I’m afraid I shall have to ask you for an explanation, Nurse Alison," he said, speaking more firmly. She didn’t reply immediately. "Please answer me, Nurse. I shouldn’t like to think you’d been remiss in your duty," he reminded her gravely. But it was Dirk who answered in an irritated, weary voice: “Oh, for heaven’s sake stop questioning Vai, Harridan! Don’t you think she’s been through enough tonight without having to answer your questions?" Bruce’s manner underwent an instant change. “I’ll ask you to keep out of this discussion, Hanson. What I’m saying to Nurse Alison doesn’t concern you in any wav.” he said coldly. Dirk straightened aggressively. “Os course it does. Everything about Vai concerns me, and I won’t have her hectored by you or anyonb else.” Why had Dirk intervened ? Didn’t he realize it was the last thing he should have done? It was Bruce’s duty to question her; and up to now, although his manner had been formal, there had been an undercurrent of sympathy. ’.'Nurse Alison happened to have been in charge of one of my patients,” Bruce said sternly. “But can’t you drop your professional manner for once and be human?" Pirk retorted angrily. “Can’t we talk it all out as friends?" “You think we are friends?" Bruce asked. Dirk shrugged in helpless exasperation. "At least you must admit we know each other well enough to drop all this ballyhoo. Since you’re a doctor, you must see that both Vai and I have had as much as we can stand tonight, Vai especially. I should have thought you’d have sent her to bed with a sedative. But apparently you haven’t any feeling for her.” “Oh. please, Dirk," Vai whis-

pered. Bruce’s color had heightened. “I have to question Nurse Alison since I have to make my report to the. Captain in the morning.” He added stiffly, “I shouldn’t like to have to report that any negligence on flier part was responsible for her, patient’s death.” ■you’d darn well better not report-, that," Dirk said furiously. “Y&u might just as well accuse mew murdering the poor old dear. After all, it was I who thrust those pills into her mouth shortly before shddied." ‘Vou gave her the pills? What piUfc?" Bruce asked slowly. 'Some heart pills Vai asked me to get out of the medicine bag. I spilled the wretched things. Maybe <f I’d brought them sooner, it would have helped." ‘But why did you give them to het?” Bruce persisted. "Oh, why not?" Dirk was beginning to lose his temper again. "W# were both badly rattled, but wevWere doing what we could. Vai wanted to go for you when Aunt May first nad the attack, but 1 said when she recovered and found you in the cabin it would probably give her a relapse. It might even finish her." “So it Was you who told her not to call me?” Bruce asked. “Well, tm not altogether surprised . . . But what does surprise me is that a girl with nursing training should have taken any notice of what you said.” “All this is a waste of time and a lot of nonsense,” Dirk retorted angrily. Tm going to take Vai to her cabin whether you like it or pot. If you want to go on with this inquisition in the morning, I’ll be at your disposal, but for heaven’s sake leave Vai out of it.” As he spoke, he moved forward, took one of Vai's hands and pulled her to her feet Bruce didn’t speak, but as Dirk led her to the door and opened it, Vai turned back toward him and gave him a quick, pleading glance. “Bruce, I'm sorry . . .” “Good night. Nurse,” he said coldly. (To Be Continued)
