Certainly it will take longer but your chances of getting there are longer, too. Five miles per hour costs about eight minutes tor each 100 miles, your margin of safety is higher so let's lose a few minutes and live a little longer. Because so many are strong-willed, “Too many are being killed”, says the Indiana Safety Council. painted, new diving boards installed and a genera! refurnishing has made the Waterworks Park a likely place these days. Youngsters coming and going at all times point up the vast pleasures which such an area can provide. Decatur can and should be proud to be able to maintain such fine recreation facillUAe. P— —o President Eisenhower, in tossing another hot potato to Congress in the form of h request for foreign aid increase to 24.86 billion for the next fiscal year, keeps pressure on after the National Legislature gave him most of his demands in the Soil Bank program. That there are agreements for and against a continuation of foreign aid, most are agreed. One of the stronger arguments for continuation and/or expansion of foreign aid is that the Soviet Union has begun a similar program. Now, some say, we must complete with Russia for the affections of some of the wavering countries. India, a recipient of more than 400 million dollars aid from us since 1940, has shown some disposition to accept Russian aid. Egypt, with Russ aid in developing the Aswan Dam project, might possibly look upon us with contempt if we were to try to match such help. Possibly a return to an earlier philosophy of, "millions for defense but not one cent for tribute" that came from the X.Y.Z. affair, might satisfy those who believe in a solidarity of the Western Hemisphere and the deterring potential of further atomic and hydrogen development. It is true that we need to aid the development of countries from which certain basic raw materials are brought, but a closer examination of where and how we sfcend seems to be in order. In the final vote it is the taxpayer who foots the bill and it is he who must decide if the premium warrants the insurance which it is expected to buy.

CHAPTER 23 TIERE WAS no doubt about Mrs. Featherstone’s mood when Vai opeped the cabin door. Whatever the immediate effects of the ehampagne had been, all feeling of gaiety had left her. She was standing in the middle of the cabin, a cumbersome figure of wrath with an unhealthy gray look to her face. “What’s the matter, Mrs. Featherstone? Are you ill?" Vai asked quickly. ’Tn) not ill, but Pm fighting mad,” her employer threw angrily back at her. “What do you think I’m paying your passage for? So that you can dance all night?” ‘‘But, Mrs. Featherstone, I tried to come in after dinner. You said you didn’t want to see me again for the remainder of the evening.” “I didn’t want to see you then. I was—l was otherwise engaged. I didn’t want to see you anyhow in that revolting costume. How dare you dress yourself up like that, and in Dirk’s clothes? I knew you were setting your cap for him. But do you think he’d look at you seriously after loving Eileen, my daughter?" “Oh please, Mrs. Featherstone, don’t talk like tlat," Vai cried wildly. “I—l csa’t near it Not to-, night I can’t! I can't!" Suddenly her knees seemed to collapse, and she sank down in an armchair and started crying hysterically. “There, you’re ashamed. You’re crying because you're ashamed, aren’t you?” Mrs. Featherstone stood over her. “You’re using all your youth and your tricks to get him away from me, to keep him away so that he'll no longer be on hand to look after me." Neither of them had noticed that the cabin door had been flung open abruptly and that Dirk stood there. “What on earth’s all the row about? I’ve been looking tor Vai The grand procession is about to start .. . Why, Vai —" He had caught sight of her sobbing in the armchair. ‘’What have you been doing to Vai, Aunt May? What have you been saying to her?" But Mrs. Featherstone was by
