County Agent's - Column o— fl SOYBEANS HUB Soybeans—number one pinch hitting crop for Indiana farmers—again are being called to bat by water plagued farmers. K. E. BeePurdue University agronomist, Sals flooded river bottofs and low lands can be planted to normal season varieties of soybeans until mid-June. U»e of earlier maturing vanities makes late June or even early July planting a good possibility, except or extreme northern Indiana. Beeson states that delayed planting of soybeans causes shorter growth and yields, but Sso cause* the plant to mature in 12ss than the usual number of Thi* is the opposite of corn. When planted in June, corn draws out its growing season, tassels in mid or late August, develops the ear late, and thus, is often immature and wet In the late fall. Shprt season corn hybrids should be selected for June planting. Each week’s delay in corn planting increases the hazard of immaturity. Although the soybean hastens with late planting it Is well to use the excellent earlier maturing varieties for each section of the state. Blackhawk. Earlyana, and Monroe are all earlier than Haweye and Harosoy and can be used in the northern half of Indiana for late June planting. Mandarin is still earlier and matures in 70 to 80 days, but growth may be short except on muck. Farmers in the southerp half of the state can use Hawkeye and Harosoy from late June to mid-July for emergency plantings. Inoculation of soybean seed is always important. Use of she rotary hoe and cultipackor to bread crusts, destroy clods, control weeds and help get seedings underway is very important under many field conditions in 156.
