Last Sunday night was an entertaining evening tor television fans of this area. Two of the greatest comedians of the age. Jack Benny and Gov. George Craig both had programs. It turned out to be a night of laughs for both the young and old. 0 0 The never ending argument, ‘Ta a street fair worthwhile?*, Is being argued again up and down the business section. Opponents of the annual event say that such a project always slows down business and takes a lot of money out of town. Proponents say a street fair is as much tradition as Christmas and New Years and that most of the money spent by those who visit the midway would be spent out of town on vacations any way. And so the argument goes merrily on. U 0 0 ' 4-H clubs in Adams county already are busy making ready for the annual 4-H fair and exhibit to be held at the 4-H grounds at Monroe on July 81, August 1 and 2. Adult leaders, consultants to the young people who are the show participants, say that interest this year is at « peak. The premium book soon will be ready for distribution and the young people of Adams county will be busy for the next two months planning their entries for the numerous awards. It’s a great event and it has the endorsement of the entire community. 0 0 The Decatur Lions club, with appropriate ceremony will celebrate its thirtieth birthday at the Youth and Community Center next «O»daju The-men, ladies and distinguished guests will join in observing the occasion. We wish the Decatur Lions club many more years of success. These men are constantly sacrificing leisure hours to help make a better Decatur. Back in the days of a Democratic administration In Washington. when the plan of paying farmers for not raising pigs was inaugurated there came from the Republican controlled press and numerous Republican controlled groups of manufacturers and Mg business a terrible howl. Today, with a similar plan in force by a system of paying the farmer for plowing a percentage of his producing acreage under, these same people are praising the Eisenhower vision. We are not opposed to the present plan and we were not opposed to the former plan. It Is a modified method of guaranteed wages, which labor has been fighting for the last several years. These same groups who Are now praising the Ike farm plan still are openly and often viciously against a guaranteed wage for labor. What is the difference? In either instance we, the average taxpayers usually are the "gouts’*. 0 0 • Ward Calland, executive officer of the National Soyabean Development Association, was reelected president of the Decatur Memorial Foundation at the anneal meeting held this week at the Youth and Community Center. The Center will observe its first birthday this month and already It has become the center of both youth and adult activities of the community. The spacious building Is used, almost the clock around, by all types of organisations. It was rightfully pointed out at the meeting of the Foundation, that the group responsible for construction of Indiana’s finest building of its type, was set up to assist in any and all area projects which make tor a better community. When a group of men and women devote so much of their time to lending aid in worthy projects, it means a worthwhile community. This js just one of the things which helps much in making Decatur one of the finest little cities in the world.
