Soil Conservation Value Emphasized WASHINGTON (INSi —Two long-range agriculture department research studies have re-empha-sized the economic value of soilsaving conservation practices. The department reported today on the benefits of such practices undertaken at Waco- Tex., and at Arnot, N. Y. At Waco, it said, 12 years of conservation practices has contributed to a substantial increase in the efficiency of cotton production through higher yields per acre. At Arnot, nine years of conservation work greatly benefited eroded land, permitting corn yields to be more than doubled, even though the effects of erosion were not completely remedied. Soil conservationist George R. Free, rebuilt eroded silt-loam soils through use of fertilizer and grass legume mixtures. The department said corn was grown on these eroded fields ia 1946-47; a grass-legume mixture in 1948-49; corn in 1950; a grasslegume mixture in 1951-52-53; and corn again in 1954.
