Long Hits Eighth Homer In 8 Games

PITSBURGH (INS) — Dale Long did something Monday night that no one in the major league baseball! ever acfrleVed — his eighth homer in eight games—and it helped the Pittsburgh Pirates down Brooklyn, 3-2, for their fourth straight victory. The two teams wrap up their two-game series this afternoon with Ron Kline (3-2) pitching for Pittsburgh against Don Newcombe (6-3). The largest night crowd since July 21, 1950 — 32,221 — saw Long drop a 380-foot shot into the lower right field stands at Forbes Field in the fourth inning. The homer tied the game, 2-2, and resulted in a terrific ovation for the 30-year-old first baseman. Long finally came out of the dugout waved his cap, and smiled while the fans <?heered. clapped and whistled for several minutes in an unprecedented tribute at Forbes — tops in the National League. The third-place Pirates overcame a two-run Dodger lead and won the game in the fifth when catcher Hank Foiles' tripled to right center and pinch-hitter Bob Skinner sent him across with a line single to center, The Bucs tallied a run in the second on a triple by Lee Walls followed by an outfield fly by Gene Freese. The victory was number eight for Bob Friend who yielded only two hits. Duke Snider tagged him for a 450-foot homer in the first inning with Jim Gilliam on first and Gilliam singled in the third. Presbyterians Favor Union Os Churches General Assembly In Favor Os Union PHILADELPHIA (INS) — The general assembly ot the Presbyterian church in the U.S.A, was on record today as favoring a plan of union that would merge its 2.750.000 membership with the quarter million adherents of the united Presbyterian church. The 168th assembly meeting in Philadelphia stamped its approval on the proposal Monday by a unanimous voice vote. Earlier the group turned back a parliamentary effort to return the merger plan to a negotiation committee with the aim ot selecting another name for the merged body, which would be known as the United Presbyterian church in the U.S.A. The general assembly pt the smaller sect will vote on the prol>osal in mid-June at Knoxville College. Kentucky. The Rev. Eugene Carson Blake, stated clerk of the assembly and president of the national council ot churches, told the group Monday night that the churches of Soviet Russia are resisting the philosophy of Marxist Communism. 1 Dr. Blake, a rectent visitor to the V.S.S.R., said since Russian churches are resisting the Marxist doctrine, “you and I will do well to treat them as embattled allies in the worldwide war against atheism and materialism which they and we are fighting.*'
