Mantle Blasts Five Hits To Lead Yank Win NEW YORK (INS)— The words will flpw about Mickey Mantle tbday, but after you say he hit five-for-five and belted his 17th home ran, what superlatives are leftt The guy is great, and Mel Ott ho* made tt official. The former Giant outfielder and baltat-famer Thursday admitted (that the Yankee centerfielder will ! iProbably be one of the next ball players admitted to the hall of fame, whether er not he hits 60 homers this year. Funny thing about Mickey is ' that •as good ae he is, -he etill , draws the boos and the catcalls when be comes to bat at the ’ Yankee Stadium, his home diamond. The tans apparently resent the fact that his press buildup compares him with Joe DiMaggio and hints that the switch slugger was i destined to take Joe’s place in Centerfield for the Bombers. Bronx baseball fans are a funny lot/ They wept when Lou Gehrig iqult the game. They wept when Babe Ruth appeared during his last illness to say goodbye to them. They pull for the underdog and they root tor tl.elr team, but Mihtle they boo. The young Oklahoman certainly has never done anything to incur the wrath, of Yankee fans. He has been a mainstay for the club ever Mnce his rookie year, .but the fanfare which accompanied his rise toAhe big leagues just hasn't been sn easy thing tor He y Yorkers to digest. .5,7 ’< And it’s ha-d to figure the reason. , Mantie is slugging at a .421 clip, tops in the majors. He leads the league in home runs, in RBl's, runs scored and total bases. His defensive play leaves nothing to be desired. His modesty is fantastic, yet he is unpopular. Possibly this last western swing of the Yankees will bring Mickey's public around to viewing the young Oklahoman with the respect his performance has earned. - Certainly he can't be expected to perform at ary higher clip than he has been during the 1956 season. • To meet Mickey is an ex- ' perience every fan should have. He treats one and all as though they, not he, were the celebrities .-**». « the experience were his, not HMffFtf? tte w modest to n fawn' and shy to ‘S point that discourages conversation. But aS Casey Stengel says, he doesn't pay Mickey to talk. His actions at the plate this year make enough noise. Mantle has carried the team through more than one victory, and at present is the only plus .400 hitter in the lineup. During the Yankee's U-to-4 win over Detroit Thursday —a win that put the Bombers three games out in front in the American League — Mantle blasted a homer, four singles and walked. He currently is 12 games ahead of the record home run pace set by Ruth in 1927. Mantle’s homer Thursday was his 13tb of the month. The records show that Ruth hit only 12 in the May of his big year. In the only other game scheduled Thursday night, the world champion Brooklyn Dodgers went down to Robin Roberts and the Philadelphia Phillies despite a three-home run attack by Duke Snider,' Carl Furillo and Jackie Robinson. Roberts handcuffed the Dodgers, 6 to 4, but the real credit for the win went to Willie Jones who walloped two homers for the Quakers. Jones' first blast came in -the fourth toning with one aboard and enabled the Phils to break a 2-to-2 tie. The Dodgers never caught up. ” .- Jones' second blow made a losing pitcher out of Don Drysdale, who scored bis only victory in Philadelphia at the expense of the Phillies in April. Snider's blast over the rigbt jtield fence, his sixth, put the r~ n”*. ■- 1. Dodgers out in fropt at the putset, but Furillo's third, la the seventh inning, and Robinson’s fourth clouted in the ninth, were anticlimaxes. The loss pat the Dodgers in a fourth place tie with Pittsburgh, a,gam* and a half behind leagueleading Milwaukee. Ted WilliamsStiH Out Os Sox Lineup BOSTON (INS)—A checkup at the famed Lahey clinic has failed to give Ted ’Williams any new information on his aching instep. A diagnostic report todays from Dr. James L. Poppen of the clinic turned out to be the same as those given the big Boston Red Sox slugger by five other physicians. The instep is bruised and there is a chronic inflammation, i Ted slipped on a shower clog la»( April 18 after playing in just two games and has been sidelined ever since. There was a growing belief in baseball circles that the odd and apparent minor accident may keep Williams out of the regular linkup tor the rest of the season circumstance which would deal the Red Sox a harsh blow, both artistically and financially. ®n Poppen a’jo agreed with the doctors who previously had examined the injury that there was no l cure, except rest, for the tojttry. Mixed Doubles At Alleys Tonight "Molly” Mies, proprietor of Mies Recreation, announced today that the weekly mixed double bowling will, be conducted tonight Bowling is scheduled to get underway at approximately 9 p.m. Over 10,000 Visit Museum At Speedway INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — More than 16,000 persons visited the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s new museum last week on its opening day and officials said that record probably will fall with Saturday’s qual ifleation crowd and 1 again to the race day crowd.
