Truck Damaged In Crash With Engine Driver Uninjured In Accident Here A Mayflower Transit company truck was badly damaged but its driver escaped injury Wednesday at 11:58 p.m. when it was struck by a Pennsylvania railroad engine at the Monroe street crossing. The driver. Oscar T. Lewis, 34, of Peru, was going west on Monroe street and was hit by the engine, which was backing up on the track. The engineer was H. M. Chandler of Fort Wayne. Damage to the truck was estimated at $1,060. There was no report on damage to the engine. Two other minor accidents occurred in Decatur Wednesday. One was at 4:15 p.m. on 23th street. A car driven by Barbara Sipe, 19, of Decatur, backed into a car operated by Mary McGill, 28, also of Decatur. Total damage amounted ot about SSO, A car operated by Joe Dean Cowans of Decatur was damaged by an unknown vehicle Wednesday morning while the Cowans car was parked on Court street. Damage ‘Vras to the left side of the car. * , Red Cross Leader To Visit Russia First Such Visit In Half A Century WASHINGTON (INS) —For the first time in a half-century, the president of the American Red Cross will visit Russia next month to inspect Soviet Red Cross preparations for evacuation and mass feeding in the event of atomic warfare. Ellsworth Bunker, former U. S. ambassador to Italy and Argentina will also discuss with Russian Red Cross officials the possibility of releasing Americans and other free world nationals who are still unaccounted for behind the Iron Curtain. Bunker’s visit will mark the first time that an American (Red Cross president has visited Russia since, the Czar decorated founder Clara Barton in 1902. Not since the close of World War II have the Soviets even permitted a U. S. Red Cross worker to penetrate their Iron Curtain. The Russians could undoubtedly learn some streamlining techniques from Bunker. Assuming office two and one-half years agO, .Augay, turned-diplomat figs slashed the national Red Cross staff from 5,100 to 4,500 paid personnel. Bunker is working closely with the civilian defense administration on evacuation and mass feeding plans in this country. He has further arranged for a complete decentralization of the Red Cross if a sudden nuclear attack should wipe out communications. In the event of an H-bomb attack, 11,000 paid local workers and two million trained volunteers in 3700 American Red Cross chapters will be ready with stockpiled splints, bandages and first aid kits to work with Vai Peterson’s civilian defense organization for race survival. (INS) — His Eminence Francis Cardinal Spellman, archbishop of New York will be speaker at St. Mary's College’s 109th baccalaureate service Saturday and will receive the first honorary doctor of law degree given by the school.
