I i SENATOR Estes Kefauver and Adlal Stevenson. both questing for ' the Democratic presidential nomination, shake hands before their radio debate in Miami. They seek the state’s delegates via primary May 29. They agreed that east and west must come to an understanding on atomic energy to preserve peace. Kefauver, however, said it was "inconsistent (of Stevenson) to criticize the administration" for not being ahead of Russia in atomic development and at the same time suggest the U. 8. quit experimenting with atomic devices. Stevenson denied he suggested the U. S. allow the Soviet to take the lead. He said, "All weapons should be developed so we can keep the peace.** (International Soundphoto)

Indiana Colleges To Absorb Increase To Meet Expected Student Increases INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana’s colleges and universities through the Indiana conference of higher education announced today they have agreed that with adequate financial support they will be able to absorb anticipated increases in undergraduate student enrollments through 1965. Dr. Thomas E. Jones of Earlham College, president of the 30member conference, said that each institution had studied its enrollment capacity and the total for all meet the expected student demand. The 3d Institutions last fall had 49,994 undergraduate students. A conference study completed last December showed that this enrollment will increase to 71,000 by 1960 and to 92,000 by 1965. The individual institution studies were said by president Jones to have been made on the basis of adequate financial support for both the private and state schools. — With-this support it was agreed that the half-and-half undergraduate enrollment balance between private and public institutions can be maintained and there would be no need for new colleges in the state. i * j. The enrollment projection to 1965 arid agreement among the 30 colleges and universities anticipates an approximate 8 per cent increase taiundergraduate enrollment each War. This, the conference has foil®. has been the aver age yearly Bcrease since 1952. The individual institutions, it? was',pointed out, will vary somewhat as between schools. *» The agreement by the colleges and universltiesto absorb increases applies only to undergraduates. Indiana. Purdue, and Notre Dame alone have graduate programs leading to the doctorate degree. The Indiana conference, which met recently in Indianapolis, will hold a fall meeting to consider additional staff, building, and staff salary needs. Kids And Cars ANN ARBOR, Mich. (INS) — A recent University of Michigan survey concluded that teen-agers' use of the family auto exerts a powerful influence on the new and used car market. The survey showed that families with teen-agers were more than twice as likely to buy a new or used car as families with no children. Car consciousness among even the pre-driving set also may be a potent force in the auto salesman's favor. - The survey reported that 17 per cent of families with children below driving age bought cars early in 1955 as compared to only 10 per cent of families without offspring.
