Assails Italian Movie Censorship Government Action Assailed By Author ROME (INS) — Italian author Alberto Moravia, whose films have been successful vehicles for Gina Lullobridgida, Sofia Loren and Vittorio De Sica, charged today that government censorship ia •‘Strangling’’ Italy’s movie industry. He also charged that Italian officials were censoring incoming American films and were “cutting some of them to ribbons." Moravia, antnor of “Woman of Rome" and other best sellers, was recently accused by Rome police of "endangering public morals.” The police took action after Moravia published the first two chapters of his new book called “The Country Woman.” Moravia said the charges were “politically inspired.” The author said ne was not afraid of going to prison for his writings, but that he was “Saddened" by increasing censorship in Italian movies. "This censorship has developed into a terrible thing,” he said. "It is strangling production, and ft is one of the major causes for the current desperate plight of the Italian cinema.” “The government has the right of censorship over all movies — even documentaries and newsreels. And what is worse, this censorship is applied by bureaucrats, many of them hang-overs from the Fascist administration.” He said censors in Italy now ban moat films that contain social criticism, pessimiem or strong realism. "The censors.” he stated, “have managed to reduce the once artistically flourishing Italian movie industry to a factory that turns out non-commital little comedies of no value.” The resultant reduction in the quality of Italian films.
