County Agent's Column Canada Thistle “Immediate steps should be taken this spring to control Canada thistle which has Invaded Hoosier farms,” O. C. Lee, Purdue University extension botanist, has reported. ' ’.J.— Canada imstle is an expensive ★eed that cftfWds out Most crofcs, including the most persistent grass. Because of windblown sheds, it is a menace to adjoining farms as well as the area it covers. So serious is Canada thistle, a state law has been enacted which requires that thistles can be controlled in bud stage or earlier in order to prevent seed formation. Lee said methods of control for Canada thistle include clean cultivation so as to keep down ill top growth during the season. Alfalfa can be used as a smother crop and effective herbicides to eradicate small patches. Recommended for the first time to control the weed is amino traizole, a new herbicide now on the market. Most effective when applied to young spring growth of thistles. 6 to 15 inches high, amino triazole should be used at the rate of eight pounds of material in about 30 gallons of water per acre.
