Barkley Death Seen Blow To Party Hopes Barkley Campaign Boss For Democrats In Senate Battles WASHINGTON (INS) *- Sen. Al ben W. Barkley’s sudden death robbed the Democrats of their 1966 senatorial campaign chairman today and increased (Republican chances of capturing senate control in the November elections. The death of the Kentucky Democrat, who only recently was named to head his party's senatorial campaign committee, means that both of Kentucky’s senate seats will be filled on election day. Sen. Earle E. Clements (D-Ky,) is running for reelection to a full sixyear term this year. Informed Washington sources expressed doubt that the opening of this new vacancy in the senate Democratic lineup would cause former Sen. John Sherman Cooper, Kentucky Republican, to give up his post as ambassador to India * for a return to politics this year. _ Earlier this year Cooper announced he intended to remain as ambassador and would not seek the GOP nomination to challenge Clements for his senate seat. Subsequently, Thurston P. Morton, former congressman, resigned as an assistant secretary of state to seek the GOP nomination and run against Clements. . ; The passing of the former vice president, who was held in high personal esteem by both Republicans and Democrats, drastically altered the Kentucky political picture and tended to trim the Democratic advantage in the senate campaign. Kentucky Governor A. B. (Happy) Chandler, elected last year in a bitter contest which found both Clements and Barkley opposing him almost to the end, will appoint an Interim successor to Barkley. Barkley was elected to his current term in 1954 and an elected successor would serve the remaining four years. Confessed Slayer Sentenced To Life Resident Os Gary Given Life Sentence VALPARAISO, Ind. (INS)—Clayborn Tatum, 40, of Gary, was sentenced to life imprisonment in Indiana state prison Monday for the killing of another Gary man, Fannin Webb, 36, on primary election day last yey wear a polling 'place. “ , In sentencing Tatum, who had entered a plea of guilty to the first degree murder charge, Porter circuit judge G.
