Russia Marks May Day With Huge Parade Speaker At Mammoth Rally Stresses Aim At Peaceful World MOSCOW (INK) — Stalin and the Soviet air force took a back’ seat today in Moscow's gigantic May Day parade — first" of the • New Leninist Era.” The speaker at a mammoth Red Square rally which preceded the parade, defense minister Marshal Georgi Zhukov, gave a relatively mild address. He warned that "reactionary imperialist circles are trying to carry out their own selfish aims” but said the Soviet people want to live in "peace and friendship with all peoples.” Russia, he said, wants to follow Lenin's "principle of peaceful coexistence between states with different political and social systems." A year ago, Zhukov’s May Day address was a fiery warning that W agsOaat S.R. would be met end repulsed. The marshal’s speech echoed the revised Kremlin line. It also was evident in the parade. Ae if by a calculated effort, a portrait ot Stalin appeared now and then in the hundreds of posters being carried LfninStalin mausoleum by the marchera ■; - Soviet artillery and what were described as jet-propelled mine throwers wars among the pieces of military equipment which trundled past the masolenm in salute to premier Nikolai Bulganin, Communist party chief Nikita S. Khrushchev and other government and party leaders. The Red air force flypast was not nearly as impressive as in previous years. Only 59 planes, all supersonic day fighters which the west calls "farmers” participated. These planes were first seen last June on Soviet air force day. As a measure of Soviet confidence — and an indication they were showing nothing new in the military hardware line —western news correspondents were permitted for the first time to take as many photographs as they wished of the military parade and the air show.

BARKLEY DEATH ' ■ (Continued From Page One) old war horse will be there." Earlier, Barkley bad spent an dative day on the Virginia college campus. He rode in the mock convention parade through the streets Os Lexington, sat in the reviewing stand, and then went to‘the gymnasium where he was elected “temporary chairman.” Then, the man famed as one of the wittiest political story tellers In America’s history, began his last speech. His attractive wife, the former Mrs. Jane Hadley, whom he married in 1949, was in the audience. She was led grief-stricken from the hall. However, she was able to compose herself to help make arrangements for funeral services. After rites in Washington, the veep will be buried in Paducah, Ky., his home town—probably on Friday. Barkley rose from humble beginnings in the backwoods of Kentucky to become a master politician who made his influence felt in national affairs for 44 eventful years. Great things came to him after his life span exceeded the biblical figure of three score years and ten. He was elected vice president of the United States at the age of 71 and became a romantic bridegroom six days before his 72nd birthday. Barkley was known to his family and to the nation at large as “the veep.’’ The nickname went well with his twinkling wit, his bubbling temperament, and his refusal to allow the dignity of high office to conceal his “common touch.’* Barkley’s relations with President Truman were cordial. There may have been defeatism among the Democrats in '4B, but there was no sign of it in the campaign tactics of either Harry Truman or Alben Barkley. They confounded the experts and won a smashing victory. ■ San Francisco — Four-fifths of an the tea consumed in the U.S. is drank within private homes, the industry estimates.
