WOMEN OF THE MOOSE ANNOUNCE SPECIAL MEETINGS The Academy of Friendship of the Women of the Moose held Initiation for a class of candidates at the Moose home. Bertha Stolt ■was in charge of the chapter night program. During the business session it was decided t» sponsor a student nurse who is in a school of nursing at the present. The group also decided to buy three tickets for the Civic music concerts to be held in Decatur. A lunch was served by Bertha Zelt and her committee during the social hour. Ireta Judt received the attendance prise end Jenny McAlhaney was awarded the door prise. Special meetings of the organization to remember are the memorial service at the Moose home May 6, with the time to be announced later. The Academy of Friendship will meet in Indianapolis, May 6. The state convention of the Moose lodge will be May 25 and 26 at Indianapolis. The Women of the Moose will send two delegates to the convention. May 10, formal initiation will be held at the Moose home. Veteran Telephone Employe Will Be Honored Wednesday Joseph A. Hunter, who has been associated with the Citizens Telephone company for 50 years, will be honored at a banquet Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Decatur .Youth and Community Center. Attending the dinner will be employes, officers and board members and guests of the Decatur, Nappanee -and Argos exchanges. Gifts from the company and from the employes will be presented to Hunter in recognition of his 50 years of service. Charles Ehinger, president of the company, will be master pf ceremonies for the program, which will also include the presentation of certificates of service and service pins to other employes with more .han five years of service with the company. About 160 persons arc expected- to attend. Jack Loos of. Fort Wayne will present entertainment. The guest of honor will review his 50 years with the company. Ha started as an office boy in 1906 and since that time has worked as a trouble shooter, on line construction and other jobs a.nd is now in the plant engineering department. Bank Robber Given Life Prison Term Fountain City Man Enters Guilty Plea * RICHMOND, Ind. (INS)—A 28-year-old man who tried to rob a bank four blocks from hia home faces life imprisonment today. William Leonard Brouse, of Fountain City, entered a plea of guilty to a charge of inflicting a physical injury in the course of a robbery in a sudden appearance late Monday before Judge G. H. Hoelscher of Wayne circuit court. Previously, Brouse had pleaded innocent by reason of insanity, but changed his mind and told 5 officials that “I want to get it over with.” He was taken before the judge, and his attorney changed the plea. Meanwhile, the victim of the shooting which accompanied the March 3 holdup of the Fountain City Bank remains hospitalized with his injuries. He is Leonard Strickler, 62, the cashier .at the bank, 10 miles north of Richmond. Strickler is reported in “fairly good” condition at Richmond Reid 'memorial hospital 'with stomach wounds. Brouse was recognized by Miss Lucille Biga, another bank employe, as he ran from the bank with some $2,000 in loot. Bystanders chased after Brouse. who dropped a trail of bills behind him as he ran.
Most of the stolen money was recovered.

Craig soon will launch another attack on Lieut. Grfv. Harold W.\ Handley, now fripnt runner 1 foir the GOP gubernatorial nomination. Craig is expected to charge that Handley has fought the state administration’s program for the past four years. . That situation was mentioned in a statement today by Senator Matthew E. Welsh, of Vincennes, currently ahead for the Democratic lamination tor governor, who said: “A party as hopelessly divided as the Indiana Republican party is unworthy of the confidence of the people and cannot be entrusted with the government of the State during the next tour years. “When the Republican chief executive lets it be known that he wil Istump the state against the second highest GOP official, it proves their party is too morally bankrupt to ask the support of any conscientious voter.” Much Cold Weather In U. Switching Accident Causes Man's Death EAST CHICAGO. Ind. (INS) —A rail Switching accident within thg Indiana Harbor works of Inland Steel company at East Chicago has cost the life of Jesse Hayes, 43, of Gary. Hayes was crushed beneath the metal bumper on a pilot car being used on a rail line inside the plant to bring material to an open hearth furnace, late Monday. He is survived by his widow and nine children. Fire Sweeps Five Indianapolis Stores Four Other Stores Are Also Damaged INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — A fire, whose total loss may run as high as SIOO,OOO, swept five Indianapolis stores today? The fire in the 2100 block of Roosevelt also caused damage to four Other stores around the corner from the scene of the principal damage. > Indianapolis fire chief Arnold Phillips reported that the fire apparently began in the Roosevelt Inn and had reached the roof of the business block before it was discovered by a motorist. Some 12 pieces of fire fighting eqiupment arrived, but it was too late to save the other four businesses in the business block, which is owned by Frank Panden, of Indianapolis. Also gutted were the Roosevelt Pharmacy, Gaines Market, the John Jeffries barber shop, and C and C TV shop. Smoke and water damage also | was caused to the Oak Hill beauty shop, Williams paint store, Caroline Salon, and the C and C cleaners, in an adjacent business block facing Caroline Ave. Temperatures Below Normal Are Forecast INDIANAPOLIS (INS) —lndiana will have temperatures four to eight degrees below normal for the next five days, according to the forecast of the Indianapolis weather bureau today. Normal maximums are 67 to 72 degrees and mlniumums 44 to 48 degrees. • Showers were predicted for Wednesday and Thursday and again about Saturday.

Stale Police Staff Vacancies Are Filled Sutton Is Promoted To Lieutenant Post INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — Six vacancies In the Indianapolis and Lafayette state police staffs were filled today by Supt. Frank A. Jessup of the Indiana state police. Promotions went with the assignments for the six, as follows: ' - Sgt. Richard Y. Sutton, of Coatesville, formerly of Decatur, was promoted to lieutenant and named to head the narcotics section at the state headquarters in Indianapolis. Det. Sgt. Marcellus J. Tlmme, of Cloverdale, was advanced to First Det. Sgt. and Trooper Robert K. Gray, of Indianapolis, to Det. Sgt. at the Indianapolis headquarters. At Lafayette. Det. Sgt. Marion A. Robbins, of Thorntown, was promoted to a first sergeant, and Corporal Ivan D. McCurdy, of Bringhurst, to detective sergeant Also trooper Bernard D. Leavitt, of Logansport, was named corporal and transferred to the Lafayette post
