0 i o County Agent's Column 0 Spittlebug A reminder that meadow spittlebug may cause more loss to the first cutting of hay crops this year than all other insects combined has been given farmers by 'Ray Everly, Purdue University entomologist. Everly estimates that the spittlebug reduces the first hay crop in Indiana an average of 400 to 500 pounds of cured hay per acre. Thus, when an acre of hay yields 1.5 tons, every such acre is grpwn to feed the spittlebug. Spittlebugs do not eat the hay but suck the juices from the stem and stunt growth. On the average, each spittlebug per square foot will reduce the yield of cured hay about 10 pounds per acre. For successful spittlebug control, early spraying is a must. Everly said the longer spraying is delayed, the harder the spittlebugs are to kill. Farmers should check their hay fields periodically and when an average of one spittlebug per stem is found, the field should ba sprayed at once. Everly adds that application should be made not later than the first week in , May. and earlier if possible. Os the materials recommended for spittlebug control, methoxychlor is probably the safest, according to the entomologist. Heptachlor. because of the disappearance of the residues in two weeks, is probably the next best insecticide. However, it is necessary that
