Confer On Order On Bus Desegregation Bus Company Heads Meet With Officials MONTGOMERY. Ala. (INS) — Officers ot the Montgomery City Lines meet today with city officials to settle difference stemming from the bus company’s desegreated seating order. Bath groups have issued running statements since Monday night when the bus line ordered an end te segregation on its Vehicles following a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court. Meanwhile, Montgomery’s Negroes meet tonight to decide whether to continue their tour and a halt month old boycott of the bus company. There has been no report of race mixing by the few Negroes who have used the buses. Montgomery Mayor W. A. Gayle said the company’s franchise can be revoked if the flrm is violating the ihw althbugh there is ho segregation provision in the recently renewed 10 year franchise. Attorneys for the National City Lines Inc., owner ot the Montgomery City Lines, maintain the supreme court ruling has dictated the policy it must follow. T The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., unofficial leader of the Negro bus boycott, pointed out that the protest has been won with the exception of one point — the hiring of Negro drivers on predominantly Negro routes. Bus company officials have offered to meet with Negroes on this point, but B. W. Franklin of Chicago, vice president of the parent firm, indicated the company could not consider hiring new’ drivers, white or Negro, In the near future because of union commitments. The bus company said it will back any driver who is arrested Cor allowing desegregation on his bus. Trade in a Good Town — Decatur.
