I «■ 0 County Agent's Column 0 1 Insect Control Control of insects and diseases IB home fruit plantings or small commercial orchards can be simplified through the use of an “allpurpose" spray. According to Frank Emerson, Purdue University extension horticulturist, these “all-purpose” materials are made up of a combination of one or more insecticides and one or more fungicides. The component parts of the spray were selected for their wide range of effectiveness and combined into a single package. The use of such materials makes proper identification of the insect and fungus pests unnecessary in order for the gardener to choose the proper chemical for control measures. Emerson says “all - purpose” sprays fall into two general types. One formulation is based on the use of ferbam as the fungicide plus arsentate of lead and DDT as the insecticides. This formulation is somewhat weak for the control of apple scab and brown rot on stone fruits but is otherwise satisfactory | for the control of most diseases I on a wide variety of fruit crops. 1 A second type is baaed on the use of captain as the fungicide plus malathion and methoxychlor as the Insecticides. While more expensive than the terbam, arsenate of lead and DDT mixture, this formulation is more effective in the control of a wider range of fungus diseases and Insect pests on a greater number of fruit crops. At present, “all-purpose” mixtures are recommended for use on apples, peaches, pears, cherries, plums, prunes, grapes, strawberries. and brambles. Application should be made about every 7 to 10 days and according to specific recommendations on the package label. Emerson asserts that applications must be made so as to give thorough and complete coverage of the

I plant Special attention should be given to the tops of taller .trees. It is Important to begin application early In tile season before I pests become established and to maintain protection throughout i the growing season. Just a few applications early in the season, . or the elimination of only a few . of the applications at critical peri iods will result in poor pest con- ’ trol. Special problems may arise i where certain Insects or diseases i will not be effectively controlled by “all-purpose” mixtures. Emer- . son says specific control measures must then be taken. Emerson adds, i however, that proper use of an “all-purpose” spray will insure a high percentage of quality fruit and still simplify the pest control problem In small fruit plantings. FRANK SPARKS (Continued From Page One) Dr. Sparks also has seen service as a director of the bureau of manpower. He has been the subject of many articles in the Saturday Evening ; Post, Reader’s Digest and Nation's Business and also was the subject of a “This Je Your Life" television i program. Retention of the income tax and i opposition to the sales tax were 1 advocated by Dr. Sparks at a meet- ' ing of GOP convention delegates from five counties in Richmond Friday night The following counties were represented: Wayne, Randolph, Rush, Fayette and Union. ? Concerning schools, Dr. Sparks said: “There can'be no strong school i system without a strong public school system as its basis. That is the most important phase of the educational system. “The second is the tax-supported institution. The entire system would collapse without these taxsupported colleges and universities because it is impossible for the private schools to handle the huge enroilmeßts.
