Chill Weather Cuts Association Crowds By International News Service American Association teams are' looking for a sympathetic weatherman with one eye today and watching Minneapolis with the other in the second day of league action. Chilly weather dampened spirits - and held crowds. to nearminimum proportions Tuesday at all four games. The weather wasn’t quite as cold as the Minneapolis Millers, 1955 champions. who had > case of the “rich get poor and the poor pet hits" at Charleston. The Senators, cellar dwellers last year, handed the New York (Hants farm dub an 8-6 defeat despite a ti\e run rally in the ninth inning. Bearing out pre-season forecasts, the Omaha Cardinals showed savvy in beating Indianapolis ,8-7, although the Indians bad 17 hits to Omaha’s nine. The difference was on the bisepaths, where 14 Indians were stranded. Cool weather at Louisville was no help to the St. Paul Saints who lost a 3-2 decision to the Colonels. The Wichita Braves, Milwaukee

(INS) —A 29-year-old Evansville theater manager today began a two-year term on the Indiana reformatory for embezzling 85,596.38. Vanderburgh Circuit Judge Ollie C. Reeves. Tuesday, said in sentencing Joseph Melcher that there were a number of facts about the case that he didn’t like. Reeves also pointed out that no affidavit was filed against Melche’- until shortly before he was apprehended in Lafayette, Colo., March 28. \ Melcher, father of two small children, said he first took money because he was living beyond his income and two years ago began gambling to recoup the losses. He said the week before he ‘‘vanished’’ from Evansville last Nov. 22, he lost 31,700 to |2,000 shooting dice in one tavern. He drew a minimum sentence. Earth Satellites Serve As Compass Forecast Made By Leading Scientist PHILADELPHIA (INS)—Development of earth satellites to serve as all-weather ‘‘space compasses" for ships and planes was forecast today in Philadelphia. Lovell Lawrence Jr, of —ttreChrysler Corp, missile operations, said so-called ASTRO satellites would circle the globe every 105 minutes. In a speech prepared for delivery to a Franklin institute symposium, Lawrence said the ASTRO (artificial satellite time and radio orbit) could be fired into outer space from Alaska on a course which would take It over the North Pole. A radio beam from the North Pole would cut the ASTRO’s power, letting it fall into an orbit 600 miles from the earth where it would travel at 276 miles a minute. Lawrence said there would be three ASTRO’s fired into outer space eight hours apart to provide a radio signal that could be plotted from any point of the earth In any weather every 105 minutes. Nuclear power for the sphere, which would be about two feet in diameter, would be one pound of

Demand State Labor Commissioner Quit Quota Statement Os Labor Head Hinkle - INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — The contest for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination warmed up today when Hugh Dlllln. ot Petersburg, one of the aspirants, demanded that state labor commissioner George Hinkle resign. Dillin referred to Hinkle’s statement thiftlabor ttbions forcing contributions from members for political purposes should forfeit their union shop privileges, adding: “M Hinkle would take time to look in the book, he would find that Indiana law since 1945 has prohibited the use of union dues for political purposes. If he knows of any violations, he should report them to the appropriate grand Jury. I know of none. “As to his proposed penalty, he is making"’a dangerous departure from fundamental American law, the theory of which is that the punishment should fit the crime. There is absolutely no relationship between political activity and the union shop." Another aspirant, state senator Matthew E. Welsh, ot Vincennes, in a speech at Portland, maintained that those candidates who have been schooled in practical party politics are best qualified to serve as public officials. He added: "Through concentrated political activity the party worker learns how the various branches of our government operate anff“how They can be made to function more efficiently and effectively. This political experience naturally makes them better qualified public servants than those whp choose to remain aloof from organised political activity.” Hinkle's reply today to demands for his resignation was a flat response: “1 absolutely will not." ' f Dallas Sells, Indiana CIO president, also accused Hinkle of being “anti-labor” and "subservient to the Indiana Chamber of Commerce” and demanded that he resign. Hinkle, in an address last week end before the Chamber at French Lick, had charged that union dues are being used in political campaigns, often against the beliefs of the persons from whom the dues came, and proposed a law penalising such usage of dues. Sells noted that existing state and federal laws already prohibit use of dues in political campaigns, to which the state labor commis-> sioner replied that he was aware of those laws. However, Hinkle re-affirmed his view that the federal and state laws banning use of union dues in political campaigns need to be buttressed. Hinkle said If his critics really spoke “for every member of their particular organisations” that he “might consider” turning in his resignation, but that he did not believe they did. Asks Judge Throw Oul Icardi Case Says Congressional Inquiry Is Invalid WASHINGTON (INS) —A federal judge was asked today to throw out the perjury case against Aldo L. Icardi on grounds that the congressional Inquiry which led to his indictment was "invalid." Defense attorney Edward B. Williams charged, in effect, that a house armed services subcommittee trapped Icardi by “conspiring and plotting to get him in and set up a perjury case.” The 35-year-old Pittsburgh man is accused of falsely denying before the subcommittee that he had any connection with the slaying ot Maj. William V? Holohan behind enemy lines in Italy in 1944. Williams told Judge Richmond B. Keech as the trial went into its third day that unless the subcommittee had a “valid legislative purpose" there could be no perjury case. He then urged dismissal ot the entire six-county indictment. The judge adjourned the court session in mid-morning, arranging for government prosecutors to pre-
