Lockheed Announces Fantastic New Jet Deadliest Weapon in Fighter Planes PALMDALE, Calif. (INS) — Lockheed Aircraft Corp, announced today th at It has developed a fahtastlc new plane, the Starfighter F-104, which fly higher and faster than any other jet fighter In the world. The new .plane is an ugly, needle-nosed, stubby winged, lightweight warship, but Lookheed claims it will become the dead< Best weapon in Uncle Sain’s fighter plane arsenal. The Starfighte< which weighs about half as much as conventional jet fighters, can pierce the sonic barrier while climbing and streak to more than twice the speed of sound in level flight. Lockheed did not disclose the top speed of the plane, but air experts believe the F-104 might be capable of 1560-miles an hour or more. The Burbank. Calif., aircraft firm demonstrated the hot new plane Monday for newsmen flown to the test grounds at Palmdale from all over the nation. Although the plane was officially unveiled Monday, Lockheed placed an embargo, upon the story so that the news could not be released until today. When the curtain was raised on the new plane in a hanger at Palmdale, many of the newsmen gasped in wonder, and some of them laughed aloud when they saw the stubby, drooping wings of the highly-touted fighter. The total wjng span is only 22 feet and the razor-thin wings are placed twothirds ot the way back on the fuselage. However, the writers soon were convinced of the efficiency of the radical new design when they saw the plane zoom off the runway, climb steeply into the sky and disappear In the upper stratosphere in a matter of seconds. The F-104 displayed a startling climbing superiority of three to one over Lockheed's Supersonic F-90 jet plane, which was flying with the star fighter for" purposes! of comparison. Jxjckheed officials sa id. the lancelike craft is a ‘‘lightweight in everything except striking power.” The Starfighter also features the first downward ejection system ever to be built into a jet fighter in production. The air force has ordered the new fighter in quantity. Sheppard's Appeal Before High Court - Ohio Supreme Court Hearing Arguments COLUMBUS, O (iNS)—Attorneys for Dr. Sam Sheppard today based lheir appeal before the highest judicial body in Ohio on assignments of error in the conduct of his trial, a missing T-shirt and a little green bag. Attorney Paul M. Herbert, former lieutenant governor of Ohio, opened the hearing for the defense. He claimed that “in violation of his oath, the court’s instructions and Ohio statutes" the bailiff the Sheppard jurors allowed them to “talk (by telephone) to anyone they cared to." He told the supreme court the' bailiff did not know what was said over the telephone and "didn’t trouble himself to find out.” Herbert also condemned the 'Cuyahoga county common pleas court’s handling of the question of Iwo _ ■inflammatory” radio broadcasts. In the first broadcast made by Walter Winchell from New York, Herbert quoted M’inchell as stating without truth: r “Today a woman was arrested in New York for complicity in a robbery. She had been the mis-j tress of Dr. Sam Sheppard, now;' on trial in Cleveland. She bore ( him a sbn, who later died.” Herbert said the court refused to do anything about two jurors who admittedly heard the broadcast. He said the trial court castigated Winchell tiy letter “but that doesn’t help the administration of justice." Sheppard, former suburban Cleveland osteopath, is now serving a life terirT in Ohio “penitentiary for the July 4, 1954 murder of his pregnant wife. Marilyn. v The defense cited an Ohio law which he claimed states that when a juror reads "inflammatory articles” in a newspaper on the case he is hearing, it is presumed i prejudicial error has been comi niitted.
