' The hope stems partly from a Russian request to delay the next subcommittee meeting until April 23. in the middle of the visit by premier Nikolai Bulganin and party boss Nikita Khrushchev. hopefulTmeet (Continued From Page One) " ■ "• • severely cdnsured lobyist John M. Mantle Stars For Yanks In Spring Gaines By International News Service The New York Yankees are hitched to a star that may shine brighter this year than anything they've seen since Joe Di Maggio., Mickey Mantle is hot and if he stays healthy, the muscular centerfielder should not only win the American League home run derby again but the batting championship and all the trimmings. Mantle gave the Yankees a shock March 8 at Washington when he slid into second and suffered a pulled hamstrung muscle in his left leg, the same injury that hobbled him for the last World Series. Since then. Casey Stengel has played Mickey as carefully as an ace of trumps with the deed to the ranch at stake. He confined him to pinch-hitting duties for awhile and only recently put him back in the starting lineup. Still the Oklahoma kid has managed to play in 23 of the Yanks’ 32 exhibition games and is hitting at a .416 clip. Sixteen of his 25 hits went for extra bases, including eight home runs. And eve® more significantly, the kid who fanned over 100 times in ’54 and 87 times last year, has struck out only once this spring Vinegar Bend Mizell was the lucky culprit. Mickey rappeh a two-run homer in the second inning Friday as the Bombers leveled the Pirates, 17 to 7, at Pittsburgh on a combination of 17 Yankee hits and five Buc errors. Yogi Berra also unloaded one along with Elston Howard. Robin Robert received what may be his last tuneup tor Tuesday’s opener at Brooklyn, and Boston bombed the -Philadelphia ace for 12 hits, including four home runs, and a 9 to 3 victory at Danville, Va. Even Red Sox starter Bob Poterfield got into the act with a three run blast in the second inning. Ted Williams and Jackie Jensen hit theirs back to back in the third and Milt Bolling completed the orgy. Rookie catcher Joe Lonnett connected for the Phils. Cleveland jumped Milwaukee ace Warrefi Spahn for all its runs in the first Inning, two on Bobby Avila’s homer, and a 3-to-2 win at In-, dianapolis, Hank Aaron homered on winner Art Houtteman. Hal Smith homered for St. Louis in the Cardinals’ 7 to 5 conquest of the Cardinals’ 7 to 5 conquest of the Chicago White Sox at Omaha. Sherm Lollar belted a threerun grandH ripper for Chicago. Ted Kluszewski’s homer highlighted the Cincinnati « to 1 victory over Indianapolis at Richmond, lad. Hurricane Jackson Challenges Champ WASHINGTON (INS) — Tommy (Hurricane) Jackson, the fistic windmill, fired another challenge at heavyweight champ Rocky Marciano today after battering Britain's former titlist Johnny Williams. Boxings closest version of perpetual motion reinforced his hold as a top contender for Marciano’s crown with a fourth round TKO over the stocky Briton in a nation-ally-televised fight Friday night. Immediately afterwards, Jackson’s manager, Louis Lippe Briedbarb, told newsmen: “I want the champ. If Marciano retires. I want him to say so. I want Marciano in the ring.” If Marciano quits, he said, an elimination tournament would be set up and Jackson would meet the winner. HO said Jackson is entitled to this privilege '’because my fellow’ has beaten everybody.” “If Marciano wouldn't fight.” he added, “I’d claim the title. We fonght our way up.” The substance of these remarks was also contained in a telegram he sent to New York boxing commissioner Julius Holland. He pointed out that Marciano’s “six months grace" has expired. Rocky last defended his title against Archie Moore Sept. 21. 1955. in New York, scoring a ninth roiind kayo. A , Recent reports from Rio De Janeiro, where he was vacationing, said Marciano might retire, although it was expected he would make another title defense this year. . . A crowd of 3,175 paid a® estimated STX>OO to see Jackson floor Williams twice in the third and once in the fourth — all tot nine counts—before referee Marty Gallagher ended the bout at 2:49. The ex-British Empire champion took the first round as he backpedaled and speared the lean New Yorker with left jabs to the face. But after that, it was no contest. Jaq£son never stopped punching. Jackson’s record is 27 winds, including 13 kayos, and four losses. Trade in a Good Town — Decatur.
