Losson Prayer: Leaspu prayer: It take* courage to wake such song* as "Oaward Christian Soldiers" a reality. A Christian soldier must be brave, courageous and willing to die for a great cause. Otherwise, it Is flippant to profess to be followers of Christ when the going is hard. We pray that the Spirit of God may more and more possess the minds and hearts of his children and together produce a spiritual force that will make justice, righteousness and peace a world reality. 1

I Ctramed Comments oh the Sunday School lessdft, the Church Endures Persecution. Acts 6:8-10; 7: 51-60, for Sunday. ApYil 22. To relieve the apostles of the physical care of the needy, and give them more time for prayer and Study, deacons were appointed. the leader being Stephen, who, in connection with his newly appointed duties, was a good witness of the risen Lord. He spoke boldly, telliqg of the history of the Israelites as a background for the Messiah whom he courageously presented as the prosaised Messiah. As a layman, he had spiritual power. and performed miracles and wonders, which brought conviction to his critics, but be never weakened and stood Kin ground to the point of being a Christian tyrV.B. “And Stepnen full of faith and power did great wonders and miracles among the people.” Stephen had groat faith; small faith brings a man to God but great faith brings God to men. As a result, Stephen bad power expressed in miracles and wonders. V. 9. “Then thee arose certain of the synagogue which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenihns. and Alexandrians, 1 and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, dis- j puting with Stephen." Here were branches of the Israelites given to differences of opinion, a picture of denominations of today- -- V.lO. "And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.” They were grounded in nationalism and traditionalism. So Stephen met their disputes, as recorded in the Intervening verses. „ V. 51. "Ye stiffn-ecked and uncircumcised of heart and ehrs. ye do always resist the Holy Ghost; as your fathers did. so do ye.” The life of the Israelites abounded iq resistance to God. V. 52. "Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted and they-Lave edafn them which I shewed NUM t of-the-wnnW W* the Just One of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers." He might have pointed ' out Isaiah or‘ Jeremiah, both of whom, according to tradition, suffered martyrdom. It always coats something to lie true to God and the Just One. Here is implied a severe charge against those who condemned Stephen. V. 53. “Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.” Stephen was bold In pronouncing judgment according to-the law and prophets who pointed to the coming of the Messiah who has now come. The truth is their judgment, and that is always so. There is power and conviction in the truth. It should be our sole ambition to be earnest seekers after truth, for God has clothed himself in truth.' and, to find truth. Is to find God. V. 54. "When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with Jheir teeth.” They could not accept the conviction so they resorted, to beastly rage. Here was a contest of physical force over and against spiritual force. Because they had sot spiritual life! they made themselves manifest as mere animal! beings who fight With physical force. V. 55. “But he bring full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing on the right hand of God." Here was a physical vision. have made: progress in God’s* iterelatlOn. we

V. 57. "Then they cried with a loud voice and stopped their ears and ran upon him with one accord.” it is a law of life that each one is getting better or getting worse every day. In this case, wickedness grew into violence. We may well assume that Stephen was getting better all the time. V. 59. "And cast him out of the city and atoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.” It was the custom for the witnesses in cases of death to east the first stone. It is noteworthy that Saul was mentioned as he was the petsecu(ion leader. What a terrible death that must have been! Stephen put up no self defense, for his soul was in God's hands and so in safe keeping. This is the thought expressed in the following two verses, ft is a great victory when reaching death to look up with faith and ask God, "Revive my spirit."—Rev. D.
