S. officials admitted today that this country is now "a prisoner of events" in the Middle East. Direct Sales Tax Opposed By Welsh Democrat Candidate Fort Wayne Speaker FORT WAYNE, Ind. (INS) — Opposition to a direct sales tax and tp right-to-work legislation was voiced by state senator Matthew K. Welsh ii) a strong bid for gubernatorial support from labor. The Vincennes attorney addressed a meeting held at Fort Wayne in the United Auto Workers hall Wednesday night. He is seeking nomination as governor from the Democratic state convention June 26. Welsh said: ( “If I am elected governor I shall always try to be the same friend of labor that 1 have been in the past. One way I can demonstrate that friendship is by opposing any attempts to impose a direct sales tax in Indiana. "Most of the backing for such* a tax comes from those Republicans who would stand to gain the most by substituting an overall sales f tax for our present gross Income system. A sales tax is not only inequitable in distribution of tho tax burden, but the cost of collections would make is prohibitive.” Welsh also reminded the labor union officials that he had opposed •the “right-to-work’’ bills offered in the 1955 general assembly,, and would do so in the future on the basis they were an attempt to destroy the power of collective bargaining. He asserted such legislation would drive new industries away from Indiana.
