9 g County Agent's Column o « Quality Eggs Hoosier poultrymen can receive more profits if quality eggs are produced and than sold on a market that pays a premium tor such oggsA W. Steer, Purdue University extension poultryman, has listed a number of factors which govern the production of high quality eggs. Ha says a basis *ur good eggs and layers bred ipr large egg sise, thick whites, strong sound shells, and freedom from blood spots. Since these factors are all inherited, good feed and care will be to no avail without this inherent ability. “Correction of management faults will not mean good eggs unless hens are bred to lay them,” Sicer comments. An adequate ration Is essential since feed can effect the quality of the shell and the possibility of blood spots. Feed also determines the color of the egg yolk. Too much green feed will make the yolks too dark while certain weeds cottonseed meal, and acorns can make the yolks green or dark brown. < Hens should be confined to the laying house to control feed and produce yolks of uniform color. Confinement under proper housing and feeding conditions can also mean more eggs and a healthier flock. Clean eggs are an absolute essential for a market premium. Every effort should be made to produce eggs that are clean through the use of such practices as clean nesting material, dry floor litter, wired perches, and frequent gathering. Since infertile eggs will hold up In quality much better than fertile eggs, all male birds should be removed except when producing hatching eggs. But It isn’t enough just to produce good eggs. It’s also necessary to maintain the high quality until the eggs are marketed, Sicer adds. Additional Information on the production and marketing .of high quality eggs is contained in Purdue University extension leaflet 382” More Pay for the Lay.” The publication can be obtained from the local county extension office.
