Portland Woman Is Killed At Capital Killed In Fall At Indianapolis Hotel INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — A Portland. Ind, woman clad in red pajamas jumped, fell or was pushed to her death today from the sixth floor of an Indianapolis hotel. Nell Harlan, who listed her age as 65 and her address as West High Street in Portland, registered late Thursday. Her body was found on the, roof of a clothing store directly under her window'. Police said the woman had a blanket wrapped around her right arm and head and may have “jumped, fallen or been pushed.’* Her son-in-law, Charles Barrebrugge. of Portland, told police Mrs. Harlan had been gone for a day and that he and his wife had been trying to find her, Barrebrugge said Mrs. Harlan's husband. Fred, died January 24. Junior Leaders At District Meeting Twenty-seven Adams county junior leaders attended the district training conference at Columbia City Thursday. Following registration, mixers, and group singing; Evelyn Mann of Geneva participated in a brief panel explaining “Why we are here.” Classes taught during the morning sessions included “Understanding the boys and girls we work with,” “What junior leaders can do,” “Show hawdemonstration", and recreation leadership. » te,' v (George Doup of the Indiana Farm Bureau was the guest dinner speaker. Doup chose as her topic the. 4-H Theme for 1956. “Improving family and community living.” - Thirteen junior leader training I conferences, co-sponsored by the I Farm Bureau Association and the state 4-H club department, are held throughout Indiana. The Decatur Elks lodge has given Decatur a distinction in scouting that stands by itself in this area. Decatur’s Air Explor er squadron 7062 of the Air scouting branch of the Boy Scouts of America, sponsored by the Elks lodge, is thfe only squadron in the Anthony Wayne council and one cf the few in thia part of the state. Even Fort Wayne cannot boast of a squadron. :■ The local boys are naturally quite proud of their distinction, c.ud are doing a lot of work tth ward improving their ranking. Also contributing a lot of time aud work is the squadron advisor, Dr. Melvin Weisman, The local chiropodist has a good background for the air scouts. He was one himself as a youth in Philadelphia, and is now working not only with the air scouts but on his own to get a private flying license. Dr. Weisman spends several hours a month in the air to log enough solo hours to qualify for a private license. Parker is employed at Smith field in Fort Wayne as a mechanic, so he knows what he's talking about. He not only knows the motors of planes, but the mechanics of the rest ofthe plane and radios too. The other instructor is Bob Railing. The local air field operator has bad vast experience in all phases of flying and instructs the boys in aerodynamics and navigation. The boys, while studying flying. do not lose sight of the basic principles of scoutiug. They will Lave three days of camping this spring on their own, three days of camping as the only air scout squadron at the Anthony Wayne council camporee at Bluffton, and a week of camping this summer at an air force base. The trip to the air force base is one of the highlights of the summer for the squadron.
