One handrod and titteen years ago yesterday. I*o, William Henry Harrison, became the first U.S. President to die in Washington. He had served just thirty days of bis first four year term, having csntractad pneumonia at bis inauguration ceremony. t 0 You have an epportunity until April 1* to visit the Freedom Foundation exhibit of flags and government documents at the Youth add Community Center. The famous tree will remain at the Library until after the coming week-end. } wlgd, rain and thunder and lightning have struck al! around us. Os coarse. Wo'rd sorry for those who have suffered but wo are thankful that the spring storms passed us up. Little IMUJ resulted from the wind in the Adams county area this week. After all. we complain about the cold in winter and the hept in summer, but it's a pretty good place for year round living. .—-ft—ft Researchers for the American Cancer socfcty say that one of the ■best ways te cut the death rate on cancer is for each person to have a thorough and periodic physical check-up. Cancer Ifhs no enemies and it could strike at *your home. Men over 45 years of age are urged to have a chest X-Ray at least twice a year. An X-Ray examination can detect lung cancer which is on the increase among men. ” .'—_g ft It seems as though everybody is against Senator Kefauver but the people, and after Mil. this government belongs to the people. Wisconsin voters switched over to the Kefauver camp as a protest. This strong protest which is becoming nation-wide is spearheaded by discontented farmers and followed by disappointed laborers and small business men and just people. The small block of millionaire business men, hpwever, continues to be the Eisenhower strength. 0 0 Tuesday April 24 has been set *a. the date for the grounds beautifying job at the Youth and Community Center. Lowell Harper, Decatur manufacturing executive, has been named chairman and will have charge of getting thirty men to assist in the planting of trees and shrubbery. Leo Seltenright, Adama county agricultural agent aud two assistants from Purdue University will supervise the planting. The Memorial Foundation is sponsoring the project and several trees will be planted at the front of the building and shrubbery will be placed along the building and driveways. The project will add to the attractiveness of the building, which already is a Youth Center show place in northern Indiana. o Officials of the Decatur light and power department are making a thorough study of the rurah power situation. Several patrons on the rural lines have petitioned the City Council for the right to cancel their Decatur contract. Several voltage meters have been placed along the lines to ascertain whether sufficient power is being furnished patrons under the cobtract. The contacts of at least one of these meters were taped shut, making it inoperative. Such actions merely delay the findings and certainly are not an advantage either to the petitioners or the City Utility. City officials have expressed themselves, unofficially, that if the local Utility is unable to furnish-the needed power, they will not stand in the way of the patrons being released from their contract. As a matter of fair play, however, and for the benefit of all concerned certainly the tests should be permitted. It is the only way any authentic results can be obtained for official action. . .
