Help Wanted WANTED Experienced beauty operator, to work with me in my new air • conditioned shop. Frieda’s Beauty Shop in Monroe, phone 6-6025. 68 12t Predicts Stevenson To Win In Florida Florida Primary Is Scheduled May 29 WASHINGTON (INS) — Sen. John Sparkman (D-Ala.) predicted today that Adlai E. Stevenson will win a majority of Florida’s 28 presidential convention votes in his May 29 primary showdown against en. Estes Kefauver (D-Tenn.) The 1952 Democratic vice presidential nominee, a Stevenson backer. made his forecast as both candidates opened their pre-prlmary campaigns in Florida. Kefauver is unopposed 4n today’s Democratic primary in Wisconsin, and President Elsenhower faces only token opposition in the form of a minor favorite son candidate, John Chapple, Ashland editor. Political observers looked to the dairy state primaries as a test of Mr. Eisenhower's farm program, since voters are permitted to vote for the candidate of either party. The Tennessee Democrat, who clobbered Stevenson in an upset Minnesota primary victory on Mar. ? 20, opened up at Orlando Monday night by branding as “hogwash” the suggestion that he is “not acceptable to the south.” Kefauver pointed out that he spoke out frankly on the segregation issue in his 1954 campaign for reelection to the senate and carried 92 of his state’s 95 counties. He insisted that “as w a southerner” he can see “no other answer’’ to the segregation problem but to tale the supreme court decision as final and "remain a united nation.” Kefauver reminded his Florida ’isteners that the supreme court also has handed down rulings on equalization of freight rates and elimination of the basing poijit system of pricing which helped* the south. Stevenson was to fly to Jacksonville today and, after several days of rest in neighboring Georgia, will speak Friday in Jacksonville. Coal Owners Face Difficult Problem Seek Successor To Late Harry Moses WASHINGTON (INS) —The Bituminous Coal Operators Association faces the difficult problem today of finding a man to carry on th« work of its late founder and president. Harry M. Moses. Moses died Sunday, and funeral services *lll be held in Washington today. Hiipi body will be taken to Danville, 111., for interment. Meanwhile, the association plans to go ahead with its annual meeting today, to include the reading of the annual report which Moses had prepared. " - f The session was expected to be brief, but In the background was the problem of' finding a man to succeed Moses who demonstrated for six years how to work with United Mine Workers president John L. Lewis. Moses had known Lewis since he was a boy, and they were close friends. No quick decision on a successor is required, since the mine workers cartnot move to reopen the current agreement for a wage boost until Oct. 1. Speculation on who might succeed Moses for the operators included George M. Thursby, vice president of the U.S. Steel Corp, in charge of industrial relations, and George H. Love, president of Pittsburg Consolidation Coal Co. The forecast In informed quarters is that the operators will choose a man who will endeavor to maintain the Moses tradition of working wih the UMW on a cooperative basis. Present indications are that Lewis plans to reopen the coal contract again this year, and to demand another disable pay raise for his 100,000 soft coal members. He negotiated a fwo-dollar-a-day boost last August with Moses. Os this, 31.20 Went into effect last Sept. 1, and he remaining 80 cents last. .Monday. _ :... Moses caused something of a revolution in the coal Industry in 1050, when he formed the association for the purpose of trying to , bargain with Lewis on a coop- , erative basis. Before that, the bit- , ter wars between the UMW and the coal operators were high marks ; in the history of U. S. labor relations. . “ Since 1950, Lewis and Moses have done the bargaining for the coal industry. They drew up the contracts secretly, and announced the new terms ’only Wheti they Were agreed upon. Truman Forecasts Democrat Victory NEW YORK (INS) —. Former President Harry 8. Truman said today there “is no question” but that "the nation will definitely vote Democratic” in the November presidential election. But he refused to say, during one of his famous morning walks, who he thinks will be or should be the Democratic candidate. Pair Os Teen-age Burglars Captured GREENWOOD, Ind. Don Sisson, Purdue University agricultural engineer, has reported, , .. .... \ ■ Most farmers recognize gullies and large silt deposits as trouble that requires attention if their soil is to remain productive. However, Sisson says there are many less obvious signs, of erosion that will eventually eat away profits as well as soil, if not corrected. According to Sisson the appearance of new stones or rocks on the surface of a field is usually a sign that fine soil has washed away from over and around the stones and rocks. Frost heaving may bring small stones to the surface in poorly drained areas. If the soil beneath a fiat stone Is a little higher than the surrounding soilforming a small pedestal under the stone—it is ah indication that surrounding soil has washed away. Further exposure of boulders or bedrock also indicates a lowered soil surface. If the soil surface has been lowered, plows may strike tile drains in natural draws or near waterways that were originally laid deep enough to be safe from damage. Exposed tree roots are another sign of soil washing. Bare spots developed by close grazing and trampling by livestock may have also paved the way for erosion. On many knobs, ridges, and upper slopes, crops are of poorer quality than those grown on the area below. Leaves are lighter colored, plants are shorter, and yields are lower. Low fertility and lack of moisture resulting from loss of topsoil cause these conditions. Soil accumulating above fences is further proof of soil loss from the upper areas, Sisson adds, . . Farmers Can obtain advise on methods to correct soil erosion from their local county agbnt or soil conservation district.
