I <M Creauted ©ommeazs on the Sunday School Lesson, The Meaning of the Resurrection, Luke 24:2852. for Sunday, April I.—Rev. D. 1 Carl Yoder. Saving faith in Christ includes I hie resurrection. Paul declares ’ that if Christ be net risen then ’ our faith is vain. When Jesus' res- ' urrection was comprehended by his followers, they memorialized 1 the day by special services of wqr- l ship. At first they observed worship ;on the Jewish Sabbath, but 1 as time went en. the day observed in memory of Chriat'a resurrection 1 was the Sabbath of the New Test- 1 ament, it being the seventh day 1 with a change in the calendar. We 1 do well to especially remember 1 God on this day as having raized his Son from the grave, making an 1 opening ob the other side of not 1 only His grave but the graves of I his followers; herein is eternal 1 iife—life beyend the grave. 1 V. 28. “And they drew near to ' the village whither they went and 1 be made as though he would have 1 gone further." Jesus goes before 1 his followers in hia ideals, his plans, holding before all men eter- l nal life. V. 28. “And they constrained 1 him, saying, Abide with us for it is toward evening and the day is far spent. And he went in to tar- | ry with them." Thia verse is the basis for the favorite hymn, “Abide with ma." V. 30. “But it cams to pass, as he bat at meat with them, he took bread and blessed It and break and gave to them." Jesus in his accustomed way thanked God for thq meal before him. A follower of the Lord will do the same. V.3J. "And their eyes were opened and they knew him. and he vanished out of their sight.” Here Jesus opened eyes as truly as he had opened the eyes of the physically blind. TO those who desire to see him. ha still opens eyes to thaf is truth. ; - VAggiir thq< said use lu another. Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked with us by the way. and while he opened to us the scriptures.'' While sincerely worshiping God, John Wesley had the deep experience of a “warm heart." Here is the secret of Christian consecration that has meaning. / V. 33. “And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together and them that were with them.” When these two followers had a warm heart they had to do something about it. V. 34. “Saying, The Lord is risen indeed and hath appeared to Sim on." There were five appearances of Jesus resurrection day. There were five later. Full assurance of the fact was made. V. 44. “And he said unto them. These are the words which I spake unto you while I was yet with you that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and tn the psalms, concerning me.” Jesus honored the prophecies regarding him and now he has fulfilled all written about him. We can not bypass God's words atrd make our own conclusions —Jesus is the answer—the conclusion. V. 45. “Then opened he their understanding that they might tinderstahd the scriptures.” Jesus explained the scriptures and thus they could understand. We need to qsb every means to understand the eeriptures. ’> V. 46. ‘‘And said unto them. Thus ft is written thus it behooved

Christ to suffer and to rise again the third day.” Christ's redemption ia not a light matter because he had to suffer far beyond Ute suffering of any man. In thia there is a note of profound sympathy. There is fellowship in suffering. But remember, the resurrection compasses the great victory (er , both Christ and his followers. , V. 47. "That repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations beginning at Jerusalem.” In this verse is God’s greatest concern for all men—repentance and remission . of sins. V. 48. “And ye are witnesses of these things.” The power of the ’ gospel in to bo seen in Christina witnessing of Christ and his transforming power. V. 48. “And behold. I send the ' promise of the Father, but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ' ye be endned With power from above.” Then will be inaugurated ' the Christian church. - Va. 56,51. “And he led them out as far as Bethany and he lifted up hia hands and blessed them. And » it ca,nie to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them and carried up into heataa.” Jesus left his blessing on bls followers and went to prepare a place fer us.
