0 0 County Agent's Column O' . " 1 '■*" 1 ' 6 Soil Drainaqd While soil drainage I baa been practiced for many yean, much of the cropland in Indiana is still not properly drained. Don Sisson, Purdue University extension agricultural egineer, says control of soil moisture is important for the farmer to obtain high crop yields. Sisson lists five field drainage methods — land smoothing, surface drainage, tile drainage, diversion ditches, and open ditches. Surface drainage is the most efficient method of removing surface water in field drainage. Surface water which collects in large areas on crop fields should be drained off by broad, shallow excavated ditches. Field operations can be conducted along or across these channels. On more level fields, land smoothing can be used to assist in surface waster removal and to obtain uniform surface drainage, Sisson reports. Surface drainage on fields that have some slope and are gently rolling is accomplished by nature without need for excavated ditches. Tile drainage should be used to remove excess soil moisture on soils that remain wet after surface water has been removed: Only in rare cases should the tile system be depended on, however, to remove this surface water. In some cases, diversion ditches may be used to divert excess surface water from flat wetlands and ease the job of the tile drainage system. — - Sisson says the method of drainage to be used depends on the type of soil, topography, and kind of crops to bp grown. Usually a combination of methods is required and a tailor-made solution is needed to solve each drainage problem. Each farmer must study his particular needs before planning a soil drainage program, the Purdue specialist concludes.
