Farm Depression Is Laid To Republicans Wickard Puts Blame On Administration WORTHINGTON, Ind. (INS) rFormer secretary of agriculture Claude R. Wickard blamed the Eisenhower administration directly for the farm depression in a speech at a dinner of the Greene county Democratic Women’s club at Worthington Wednesday night. Wickard, so far the only candidate for the Democratic nomination for United States senator, said: ‘‘The Eisenhower administration is solely responsible for the great drop in Income and for the paralysis in business on Main Street The Eisenhower administration is solely responsibe for the delay and the bungling in presenting a remedial farm program. The Eisenhower administration is solely to blame for proposing a farm program which will further depress farm prices and bring bankruptcy <0 farmers and businessmen in rural areas. “The best farm relief ws farmres can get is to elect a president and a congress which has the best

interests of farmers end small business at heart" Wickard charged secretary of agriculture Ezra Taft Benson with bungling the feed and livestock situation, saying: “For the last two crop years, Benson has drastically cut price support on feed grains other than corn. He has permitted farmers to Increase their acreage of these feed crops. He has sever put on a real sincere campaign to get farmers to participate in the corn allotment program which he at heart doesn’t approve. . “Today the midwestern feed and livestock producers are hit hard by low prices—harder than any other group. During December, the month of many marketings, corn brought 63 per cent of parity. Cattle brought 64 per cent of parity and hogs brought only 50 per cent of parity. Benson’s actions and lack of actions have brought us corn belt farmers to this very serious situation. Under the new Eisenhower farm program. Benson Would be given authority to make matters still worse for us corn belt farmers." Pittsburgh — Steel industry of the UJB. used 13 billion tons of water during 1954. U. S. farmers own 244 billion board feet of standing sawtimber.
