Television Awards On Saturday Night Emmy Awards To Be Presented Saturday HOLLYWOOD (INS) —Despite all the fighting* and feudin' in the ranks, the eighth annual television academy awards night promises to be the brightest in history. The 5100,000, hour - and -a - half show will be telecast over NBC-TV Saturday with Art Linkletter emceeing from the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Hollywood and John Daly running things from the WaldorfAstoria in New York. ’ More than 5000 guests and over 200 nominees will assemble in the two locations for* the famed "Emmy'’ awards to be handed out by Phil Silvers, Sam Levenson, Hal March, Robert Cummings. Jimmy Durante and George Gobel. The fact that certain members ot the academy, Including Jerry Lewis, Dick Powell, Groucho Marx gnd Jack Webb have been giving ’•emmy*’ a bad time, ftktdTt-fittlt the situation one>bit. “This just proves,” said president Don de Fore, “that the academy is still euffering from growing pains and that the beefers have been taking the emmy awards too lightly." — Lewis and Powell both refused to emcee the big show—-w- Lew is because his partner, Dean Martin, was not nominated, and Powell on
general principles. Groucho bopped on the anti’ etnmy bandwagon becauie he wound up as an "audience participation” nominee instead of in the “best comedian” class, and Webb called a foul because be was named "best director of a film series" in connection with' a 1954 instead of a 1955 film. It was later revealed that Webb' himself submitted the nomination. This year’s <0 national emrny awards will be handed out against almost duplicate backgrounds, since the Pan Pacific Auditoribm (usually used for sporting events) has been fice-lifted to simulate the Waldorf ballroom in New York. On the big night, celebrities and guests will be greeted at the main entrance of the Pan Pacific by a nine-foot, gold-colored plastic replica of the emmy, set before a 20-foot curved backing. On stage, Linkletter and the award presenters will work from a lectern equipped -with a special TV monitor. Immediately behind the lectern will be a huge nlne-by--12 foot projection screen which will be used to shop happenings in movietown and in Gotham. Top programs up tor enmy awards are the Jack Benny show, the Bob Cummings show. Caesar’s Hour, (George Gobel show, Make Room for Daddy and the Phil Silvers show. Top (acting nominees include Oracle AHen, Eve Arden, Lucille Bali, Jean Hagen, Ann Southern, Bob Cummings, Jackie Gleason, Phil Silvers, Danny Thomas and Robert Young.
