Close Games Mark Opening Os NCAA Play By International News Service Close and exciting games marked - the opening round of the national collegiate basketball tournament Monday night in New York and Fort Wayne, Ind., while Seattle defeated Idaho State, 68 to 66, to qualify for the Western regional playoffs. When the nectlc evening of basketball was completed, here’s what happened: Canisius and Temple scored upset victories at New York's Madison Square Garden in the eastern regionals while Wayne of Detroit surprised Chicago’s De Paul Blue Demons and Morehead rolled over Marshall in the midwest regionals. Canisius upended mighty North Carolina State, Atlantic Coast conference champions, 79 to 78, in a game that went into four overtimes. Sub Frank Corcoran gave the scrappy Canisius Griffins from Buffalo. N. Y-. a thrilling victory by scoring a Jump shot with six seconds remaining in the final extra session. Henry Nowak was high man in the game with 29 points for the Griffs. Ron Shavlik of the JhC. State Wolfpack put in 25. Temple’s Fred Cohen scored on a jump shot with seven seconds remaining to down the Holy Cross Crusaders, 74 to 72. Just after the buzzer sounded ending the game, a layup by AH-Americai| ,!To»m Heinsohn of Holy Cross went through the basket but it was not allowed by officials. Heinsohn had 26 points for Holy Cross. Wayne university upset DePaul’s Blue Demons, 72 to 63, with Clarence Straughn scoring 27 points for the winners. Ron Sobleszcyk paced DePaul with 17. The Wayne Tartars led 37-36 at halftime after a see-saw first half. But in the second half, a devastating fast break and excellent handling gave the Detroit team the edge. Morehead Ky. State, the nation's top scoring college team, scored a 107 to 92 victory over Marshall with dangerous Dan Swartz pouring in 39 points for the Victors. Seattle's Chieftains were expected to win the qualifying NCAA berth for the western regional playoffs with ease but ran into difficulty against a stubborn Idaho State team. The Chieftains* Clair Markey, a substitute player, pulled the game out of the fire for Seattle with six quick points after the score had been tied at 60-all. Six times the lead changed hands and six times the score was tied. But Seattle finally won, 68 to 66. Seattle thus won the right to meet Utah in the Western regional NCAA playoffs Friday at Corvallis, Oro. The other game pita the San Francisco Dons, the Na 1 team in the nation, against UCLA, Pacific Coast conference victor. Today's games at New York pit Connecticut (16-9) against Manhattan (16-7) and Dartmouth (16-10) against West Virginia (21-8). Memphis State (20-6) meets Oklahoma City (18-6) while Southern Methodist (22-2) faces Texas Tech (13-12) at another Midwestern NCAA regional at Wichita, Kas. There will be no admission charge, but an offering may be taken, dependent on the game. The public is invited to attend. Willshire Plays In Regional Thursday The undefeated Willshire Bearcats, who won the district class B tourney' at Lima Saturday night, will seek further laurels Thursday when they will be one of four teams in the regional meet at Toledo. Willshire will meet Ney, Defiance district champs, at 9 o'clock Thursday night at the Toledo University field house. Sycamore will meet Troy-Luckey in the Thursday opener at 7 o’clock. Winners of the Thursday night games will meet at 2 p.m. Saturday for the regional title, with the final winner moving on to the state finals March 23 and 24 at Cleveland. To Announce Winners In Bowling Tourney Winners in all four events of the Decatur city bowling tourney will be announced Thursday. Oran L. Schultz, city secretary, stated he will be at the Mies alleys March 20 from 7:’30 to 9 p.m. and March 22 from 7:9b to 9 p.m. to pay prize money. North Africa Wheat Harvest Is Increased WASHINGTON (INS) — North Africa’s wheat harvest is now estimated at 1,463 million bushels, about 140 million bushels above the 1954 total. The agriculture department said the 938 million bushel crop in the U.S. was harvested from the smallest acreage since 1934. New record yields, however, brought production within 47 million bushels of the 1954 crop when the harvest acreage was seven million acres larger than last year's. Auto Accident Is Reported To Police One accident was reported to the city police Monday when autos driven by James E- Myers and Phillip A. Deßolt, both of Decatur, collided at the intersection of First and Monroe streets Damage to the Deßolt car was estimated at 8100 and the Myers car had |SO in estimated damages Myers was arrested as a result of the accident for failure to yield the right of way. He will appear in court later. Robert A. Wenger, Decatur, was arrested for disregarding a stop sign at Stevenson and Mercer avenue. He was fined 81 and costs, totaling 815.75. James Glynn, Cleveland, Ohio, was arrested for public intoxication yeatertday. He pleaded guilty to charges and was fined 81 and costs, totaling >l4Chicago — U.
