National 4-H Club Week Is Being Marked State Membership Quota Is 86,000 For Coming Year Boys and girls in Indiana will organise their plans during national 4-H dub week, March 3-11, to reach their goal of 86,000 members in 1956. Members and leaders will again stress the theme ‘‘lmproving Family and Community Living.” according to Harold B. Taylor, state club leader at Purdue University. Purposes and objectives of 4-H will be told during 4-H week through store window displays, news stories, radio, television, and programs at local gatherings. Volunteer local leaders, county agents, and home demonstration agents will be helping the members carry on local membership drives in order to try to push Indiana over the 83,000 enrollment mark in 1956. ; , > Hoosier 4-H club members will be able to choose from among 37 projects tn 1956. Last year the 8,759 4-H club members in Indiana enrolled in 73,402 agricultural projects and 99.506 home economics projects, an increase of 2,606 over 1955. The moot popular agricultural projects during 1955 were garden, 7,776 enrollments; electric, 7;06O; swine, 6,701; forestry, 6,623; corn, 5.806; wildlife, 5.489; dairy, 4,581; beef, 4,381; and tractor 3.797. The most popular home economics projects were baking with 33,469 enrollments, clothing with 28,754; and food preparation with 16,942. In addition to seeking new members, more local leaders are needed, says Taylor. During 1955 it took 1,497 men and 2,660 women as local leaders to help Indiana's 3,265 clubs. They were assisted by 3,860 boys and 5,782 girls as junior leaders. Taylor again emphasizes that the success of the community 4-H program depends in a large part on the efforts and assistance at local leaders. Membership in the 4-H club program is open to any boy or girl between the ages of 10 and 21. Enrollment cards may be obtained from local club leaders or from the county extension office. County Goaf 1,000 Nine-hundred-and-fifty 4-H members and leaders of Adams County will join with more than SLQftft other Hoosier 4-H members in observing national 4-H club week, March 3-11. County agricultural agent, Leo N. Seltenright, says that 4-H club work again this year will center about the theme "Improving Family and Community Living” Indiana had 81,759 4-H members in 1955, and the state goal for this year has been set at 86,000. Adams county has a goal of 1000 for 1955. Club members in 4-H will be ’dble to choose from among 37 projects this .year with projects available for both town and rural members. Certain other activities may be carried by club members, but thdy arb not classed as projects. Among them' are judging of livestock, dairy, poultry, crops, and vegbtales, public speaking and demonstrations, forestry and insect identification, health, safety, and tire prevention practices and participation in musical and other talent groups. the 4-H club program is open to any boy or girl between the ages of 10 and 21. Membership cards are available from local leaders or from the county extension office. Complete Projects Seven-hundred-sixty-three 4-H members completed their project work in Adams County in 1955 out of the 880 members who enrolled. These members were enrolled in 30 local 4-H clubs under the direction of 70Jocal 4-H club leaders, reports Leo N. Seltenright, county agent. A total of 1740 4-H projects were comleted by 4-H members In Adams county. The most popular 4-H projects for both girls and boys were food preparation, clothing, dairy cattle, electricity and swine. Junior leadership was a popular 4-H activity where older 4-H members can assist the local 4-H leaders and help other 4-H members. The largest number of 4-H members are enrolled ih the first and second years of 4-H work. It is also true that there are more 4-H members in the ten and eleven age groups. However, the members are unread rather evenly through to the 10 to 20 years age groups which is a requirement for enrolling in 4-H work. Boys and interested In 4-H club work should contact their local 4-H club leader or the county extension office at Decatur. Pro Bnskefhnll • Saturday’s Results St Txmls 92. Fort Wayne 86.
