W'-WW’IW'W. 8 County Agonfs Column • 1 Prices Strengthen Strengthening prices for soybeans and bread grains featured farm markets during the past two weeks, report M. Paul Mitchell, Purdue University agricultural economist. Factors contributing to advances of five to six cents per bushel for wheat and eight to ten cents per bushel for rye are reports of severe weather damage to the European bread grains during recent Weeks and prospects of higher price supports now under consideration by congress. Price gains of ten to twelve cents per bushel characterized the soybean market of the past two weeks. Heavy buying by processors, stronger oil prices, and accummulated increases in exports of more than eight million bushels over last year’s levels were responsible for these price gains, Mitchell said. Feed grains, with free stocks in more than plentiful supply throughout most of the country, failed to share ths price advances reported for soybeans and bread grains, and after minor day to day fluctuations dosed’the two week period at about steady prices. in livestock markets, heavy receipts continued to dominate the situation for both cattle and hogs. In the bog markets, new crop light weight hogs continued to show up in increasing volume, especially in markets such as Indianapolis and East St Louis which draw their receipts from areas of early fall farrowing. In the period of shift from the spring crop tq the fail crop, the supply of light weight hogs is increasing and heavy hogs decreasing, causing a price adjustment relatively more favorable for butoher hogs. ( Hog prices showed losses of about >1.25 to >1.50 for the two week period with greatest losses on-the light weight butchers. Re-

With the recent release of the USDA estimate of cattle on farms showing an increase of another million head of cattle on farms during 1955. prospects are for continued high levels of beet feeding and marketing for the next tew years. Lamb marketings were slightly higher than levels of a year earlier. Prices stayed about steady from 920.50 to s2l for top Quality lambs.
