lowa To Play Illinois For Big Ten Title CHICAGO (INS) — Illinois and Iowa; tied for the Big Ten basketball lead, began "a big buildup” today for their climactic showdown at lowa City, la., Saturday. The Big Ten title chase reaches the boiling point when the two Western Conference leaders meet in a game that will virtually assure the winner the league crown and an automatic berth to the NCAA. The contest will be televised nationally as the CBS “Game of the Week." The lllinl and Hawkeyes overcame strong first-half apposition Monday night and went on to score easy triumphs. Illinois fought off a determined challenge from Minnesota to come from behind with a torrid second half drive and rout the Gophers, 97 to 81, at Champaign, 81. lowa\ found Northwestern tough for the first half but completely took charge after the intermission to win easily, 86 to 68, at lowa City. ’ V; lowa and Illinois have identical 11 and 1 Big Ten marks but the Illini have an overall season mark of 18 and 2 compared to 16 and 5 for the Hawks. wxm its sixth game, beating Wisconsin, 89 to 82, at East Lansing, Mich., and Purdue defeated Michigan. 72 to 68, at Lafayette, Ind. It was Purdue’s eighth win in 13 conference tries. Illinois and lowa both face another conference opponent following Saturday's battle, but for all practical purposes, the championship will be determined on Saturday's outcome. Illinois plays Northwestern next Monday while lowa entertains Indiana. The Gophers proved a tough hurdle for the mini as they did for lowa last Saturday. The Illini grabbed a 33 to 23 lead midway in the first half but some good outside shooting by Dave Tucker and George Kline tied the score at 39 to 39. Minnesota managed to affect a 49 to 46 halftime edge. The Gophers ran into trouble after the second half opened as Illinois’ junior center George Bon Salle chipped in five straight points to give his teammates a 51 to 49 lead. Illinois never fell behind from that point. Bon Salle played what head Illinois coach Harry Combes called "his greatest game" as the big pivot ace poured in 36 points on 15 field goals and six out of eight shots from the charity line. Tucker led the Gophers* attack with 27 points while Kline connected for 20. All five of lowa's regulars broke into the double scoring column as the Hawkeyes dealt the hapless Wildcats their 12th straight Big Ten setback and 19th loss in 20 games this season. Northwestern now has tied its all-time Big Ten

losing record set in 1923. Center Bill Logan led the Hawkeyes’ scoring parade with 21 points while forward Bill Behoof tallied 14 and guard Bill Seaberg 14. Northwestern's Glen Lose chipped in 29 points. lowa has won its last 12 games in a row, 11 in the Big Ten since losing the season’s opener to Michigan State, 65 to 64. Purdue clung to fourth place, a half-game behind idle Ohio State as senior forward Joe Sexson contributed 30 points to the Boilermakers’ causp. Sexson has scored 397 points this year, two short of the all-time Boilermaker mark set by Carl McNulty In 1952. The Spartans -got a # 35-point scoring effort from forward Julius McCfty as the 6-foot, 3-inch senior forward raised his Big Ten total to 341 points, 38 less than Ohio State’s Robin Fremean. Wisconsin, which suffered its 10th loss in 13 Big Ten games, was paced by senior guard Dick Milter who poured in 34 points.
