Newspaper Protests Secret Court Trial Newsman Is Barred At Criminal Trial INDIANAPOLIS (1N8) —The Indiana state bar association opened its mid-winter meeting today in Indianapolis with consideration ot several legal headaches, from freedom of the press to the justice of the peace system. The board of managers met this morning and the house of delegates this afternoon. A committee named to investigate the justice ot the peace system was one of several making reports today. A late developing demand for attention of the states bar also arose when the Bloomington Her-ald-Telephone asked that the organisation investigate an alleged case of a judge who barred a newsman from a criminal trial. The charge was made by Bruce B. Temple, general manager of the newspaper He said that Monroe Circuit Judge Q Austin East conducted a secret trial of Larry Rothrock, 18, acused of burglarising three schools, and refused to-admit

the press. Judge East held that It was a juvenile case because it first came to trial when Rothrock was 17. But Temple charged that since the first trial, at which Judge East gave the youth a suspended sentence, was a Monroe circuit court case, the second one also was. The Herald-Telephone reporter, J. D- Burton, who was expelled from the second trial, offered to appear before the present meeting of the bar association and testify on the Incident. The newspaper Wednesday, carried a front-age editorial demanding: ' - "in the cause of justictf, judge asked to uphold constitution or quit.’’ Thomas M. Scanlon, of Indianapolis, president of the Indiana bar association, promised that an investigation would be made.
