Prep Tourneys Are Ripe For Many Upsets INDIANAPOLIS (INS) — The 45th annual IHSAA sponsored basketball tourney is ripe for a serie? of upsets whose chain reaction woift be completed until the chainpion is crowned March 17 in Butler Fieldhouse. , Os the. 742 teams set to the month-long dash for prep nardwood fame this Wednesday, none sits in a better position to start the chain of surprises than Fort W’ayne Central. Central’s victory in the sectional could be topped only by Muncie's regional possibilities and that only by Jasper in the semi-finals. And how about Clinton, Greencastle or Monticello in the title round? Fort Wayne’s rebuilding Central squad didn’t recover from an opening game lacing at the hands of the defending state champion Tigers of Crispua Attacks until the consolation game at Columbus, Dec. 30. Th its first 10 games, Central got over the 40-point mark just onee for its lone victory. Since beating Jeffersonville, 74-47 at Columbus, Central has been below the 50 mark only twice. It also has won seven-of-11. And that’s a, natural. Fort Wayne Central also has beaten North and South and could grind its way through the Summit City sectional. Saturday Central knocked off Fort Wayne Concordia 79-60. Muncie Central, with a sectional bye, probably will take Rs ninth straight first round title. It then goes against Richmond (more likely than not) in the first game of the Muncie regional. Richmond holds two victories over the Bearcats this year and fans are harking back to the 1954 tourney when Muncie was unable to make a third straight win over Richmond stand up in the regionals. There probably is no more intense rivalry in the state than the Muncie4Richmond feud and this scrap should be a beauty. Richmond, with occasional lapses, has shown class all finishing with a~ P-li mark? has only its victories over Fort Wayne North, Kokomo, Hammond and Lafayette to keep fans hopeful. Jasper figures as good a chance as any to provide the top surprise of the southwest and that should come in the semi-final in which everyonjp. well almost everyone, -has conceded to Seymour-New Albany regional winner or Evansville Central-Princeton regional winner. The Ixiu Wuchner Wildcats are 15-5 and finished strong even counting the one-polnt-double overtime loss to Evansville Central. The strong finish coupled with the disastrous first-game of the 1955 tourney may spark the Oats to a leal victory. Pro Basketball Sautrday's Results Syracuse 85. Fort Wayne 84.
