F- Oraliker, chairman ot the Adams county U. 3. savings bonds committee, has received a report that savings bonds sales for the county for the first month of he year were $119,246 compared with $61,095 for January of 1955. A peace-time record for the sale of savings bonds for January was established last year, making it difficult for Indiana counties to continue to exceed the sales for the like month of a year ago. Savings Bonds sales for the state were approximately 10 per cent under January of 1955, the sales last month being $16,627,916 as compared with $18,649,221 for the corresponding period of last year. Thirty-five counties, however, were successful in recording higher sales for last month over January the year before. No Single Cure-All For Farm Surpluses Says Broad Action Needed On Problem WASHINGTON (INS)—There is no single cure-all -for America’s agricultural surplus. This was the underlying theme of an address prepared for delivery by Gwynn Garnett, administrator of the agriculture department's foreign agricultural service, before the national farm institute at Des Moines, lowa. Garnett pointed out that broad action to lick the surplus problem is needed on several fronts. Exports alone, he said, will not solve the problem. He asserted tnat tne major market for U.S. farm products has been and will continue to be domestic markets. These iharkets, he said, absorb more than half of U.S. production of the principal export products and more than 90 per cent of the total production of U.S. farms. Nevertheless, Garnett added, a high level of exports is "an essential ingredient of a high level of agricultural income. A continued high level o- agricultural exports is possible.” Garnett pointed to four avenues

which ha laid must he approached to attain high levels of U.S. farm exports. He said: "L We need sound domestic farm programs that encourage — not hinder —a high level of exports ...” such programs, he added, must encourage production and marketing of commodities demanded abroad, and must keep the flow of trade in private hands. "2. We need sound national trade programs and foreign economic policy . . . to data greater access to foreign markets . . < and as assure tor foreign customers the con tinuous opportunity to Sam the dollars to buy U;S. farm products." "3. We need to continue the use of special government export pro grams, including sales for foreign currencies, barter, purchases for foreign aid, And charitable ddna ttoha, while surplus problems are acute. We must remember, however, that such programs should be temporary means of meeting export needs under conditions unfa vorable to regular commercial transaction!. "4. We need to vigorously mer chandlse quality products competi tlvely prices in foreign markets." Garnett stressed that private trade farm organisations, producer asso clations, colleges, and farmers al) have important parts to play in more vigorously merchandising U.S. farm products abroad. *• ■ trade in a wood Town — Decattu

INDIANA LEADERS . (Coptlpueg rrom Paas One > bower. Tennessee Senator Estes Kefaurer has been advised to refrain from entering the Indiana primary by astute associates. In that event, indications are that no other Democrat will take the plunge. Adlai E. Stevenson in 1962 garnered 25 of Indiana’s 26 votes in the national convention. Kefauver had one vote. The Democratic state organization apparently still favors Stevenson. The GOP state committee will meet at noon to consider national convention arrangements. Trade in a Good Town — Decatur
