Yellow Jackets Rally To Defeat New Haven Bulldoas. 68 To 65
Decatur* Yellow Jacket*, trailing by nine point* midway through the final quarter, staged a stouthearted rally to take a 88-66 thriller from the New Haven Bulldog* on the Decatur floor* It was the fourth consecutive* victory tor the Yellow Jacket* and snapped a seventgame winning streak tor the Bulldogs, the Allen county champion*. It also marked Decatur's third Northeastern Indiana conference victory as compared to two losses. The Bulldogs, strictly on perfect tree throw shooting, had moved into nine-point leads at 63-54 and 65-56 with four minutes to play when the Jackets began to move. Tony Kelly hit a field goal, Bob Baidu dropped in a pair of frse throws and Stan Kirkpatrick hit from the field and it was 66-63 with three minutes to play. Gene Baxter intercepted a pass at midcourt and dribbled under for an easy layup 20 seconds later and New Haven’s lead had melted to one point- With slighly more than a minute to go. Banks knotted the count on a free throw- With 20 seconds to play, Baxter hit on a short shot to give the Jackets a 67-65 lead, and Banks, fouled with one second to play, netted one of his free throws for the final 88-65 tally, as the Jackets had scored 10 points while holding New Haven scoreless In the last four minutesThe first quarter was nip and tuck, with New Haven holding a 15-12 advantage at the end of the period. The Bulldogs led through most of the second quarter, with the Jackets moving back to knot the count at 30-30 at the long intermission. The Yellow Jackets bounced back into the lead with the opening of the third period on Kelly's threepoint play, and had opened up an eigh-polnt gap at 43-35 midway through the quarter, only to have the Bulldogs bounce back and take a scant 51-50 margin at the close of the period. Kelly and Baxter led the Yellow Jackets scoring with 22 and 20 points, respectively, while Skip Cloys counted 20 points, half of them on fra* throws, to pace the Allen county champs, who also had Dale Herman with 16 and Jack Null with 14. The Eagles were out in front at all resting points, 18-12, 40-28 and 55-49. Montpelier rallied for a 6484 tie in the final period but the Eagles again pulled away for their six-point triumph. Stew Schnepf tallied 23 points and Norb Witte 20 for the Eagles, while K. Payne counted 22 for the Pacer*.
