• « County Agent's .. > • Hog Increase The hog market ‘hit with full force during the past week as receipts at the principal markets fell 21 percent under those of a week- earlier and to a Idvel only slightly above that of the corresponding period of a year earlier. Advances of from >3 to >3.60 were registered over the depressed prices of late November through mldJanqary. Paul Mitchell, agricult: ura! marketing specialist at Purdue University, reports tops of >14.75 and 815 00 at primary markets. Although highAr wholesale prices of pork products contributed to higher live hog prices, part of the advance came from narrowing packer cut out margins, as these processors had to compete more effecively for sufficient volume to keep killing lines operating. This advance is largely seasonal in nature, reflecting the fact that since August 1, marketings of hogs have been 16 per cent higher than a year earlier out of a total spring crop that was estimated to be only 8 percent larger- It thus appeared inevitable that shortages in Receipts would occur before the fall pig crop reached market weights. The fat cattle market has not fared as well as the hog market, according to Mitchell, as heavy receipts of long fed cattle continue to move marketward along with Increased supplies of short fed cattle- During the past week a few loads of strictly prime handweight steers reached the 824.50 to >25.00 level, but in general, weight and extreme finish continue to be penalized. For the first time in several years the average dally cost of slaughter steers fell below >2O 00 on the Chicago market. The fat lamb market has also come in (or an advance of from >l-50 to >2.00 during the past two weeks. Prices Strengthened during the third week of January despite larger marketings, but most of the advance came with curtailed receipts during the week just closed. These smaller marketings of fed lambs have veen tn line with the recently released report of the lambs on feed which indicate an over-all reduction of

eight percent iu the number on feed. For the corn belt states the reduction is estimated at 18 percent Grain markets have been rather listless during the past twojweeks with soybeans being the exception to the rule. Uncertainties about new farm legislation have been an important factor in the trading of wheat and feed grains- The arrival of snowfall in the great plains was responsible for a light weakening of wheat futures- Corn and oats prices bare failed to show any significant trend during the two week period, and after minor day to day fluctuations are ending the period at about steady prices. Soyean prices have staged a rather steady advance during the two Week period with gains of mostly 3c to 4c per bushel on the futures contracts, which have also been reflected in the cash prices on most local markets- Strength in the soybean market was attributed chiefly to heavy buying of oils or Industrial purposes and increased export of soybeans. Lard futures have shared the stronger position of the hog market, advances of about .76 per hundred having occurred during the past two. weeks- Commercial fryer markets have strengthened during the past two weeks. This was due to shorter supplies add better demand. Farm prices were 1c to 2c higher, selling mostly at 20c this past week- Heavy fowl prices continue to be firm, with demand strong. A wide range of prices was reported with most sales 24c-26c at the farm. The graded egg market has declined during the two week period partially due to increased receipts and ja reaction to the higher prices at the end of DecemberPrices were down from 2c-4c a dosea. At present, grade A large eggs are quoted from 35041H<', mostly 38c-40e. The only action in the turkey market was small type fryersA few thousand were at 27c farm prices. Looking into the immediate future, Mitchell believes that the hog markets should be able to bold the price advance for a few weeks or until increased supplies from the fall pig crop start flowing in volume to markets. Somo decline in prices is to be expected at that time- More time seems to be need-
ed for the fat cattle market to work out as its currently weak position, lambs Should be able to maintain thel retrongeY position pricewise. No signification changes are to be expected in the grain markets. A steady to strong market is expected for fryers, to bo followed by weakness as increased supplies flow to market from the heavy November-December placements. Bgg prices can be expected to show moderate seasonal declines during the next few weeks.. Spring Barrow Show Opens February 28 7th Annual Hoosier Spring Show Planned Producers or Indiana’s top farm product—market hogs —will compete for blue ribbon honors in the seventh annual Hoosier spring barrow show at Indianapolis February 28 and March 3. Dick Hollandbeck, Purdue -extension swine specialist in charge of the show, reports that light- ‘ weight and heavy weight barrows 1 will be judged as individuals and • in pens of three at the "on toot” chow in the swine barn at the state fairgrounds, Tuesday, February 28. Four days later, Saturday, March 3, the best will be rated in the carcass contest at| Klngan's main plant on West Washington street. Sponsors of the two-day show are PUrdue University's agricultural extension service, Kingan's Incorporated, and the Indiana swine breeders’ association. Cooperating breed associations and the packer-sponsor are offering premiums of more than >SOOO. Entries close February 13, according to Hollandbeck. Fifty-six classes of purebred and crossbred barrows of eight recognised breeds will beshown along ‘ with three classes for all othefr barrows. The first prize winner in each “on foot" class for single barrows will be automatically entered in the carcass contest. In addition, each exhibitor is permitted one entry for the event, regardless of its placthg in the barrow show. Judges for the grand champion i “on-foot” are W. H. teruner, Ohio State University; R. H. Drummer, University of Wisconsin; and W. L. Plager, lowa swine producers assiciation, Des Moines, lowa. Bruner will also judge the carcass champion with the aid of J. Kemp.
