Austrian Wins Third Medal In Winter Gaines CORTINA D'AMPEZZO. Italy UNS)—Toni Sailer, Austria's one man team, swooped to victory in the downhill skiing event today to make off with his third gold medal of the winter Olympics. The daring young “glamor boy" stole the individual spotlight at Cortina when he biased down the coarse in two minutes, 52.2 seconds to chalk up his third personal triumph (n the past sis days. Last Sunday Sailor won the giant slalom and two days later he joined Russian speed skater Eugeniv Grisctein is the only otbei* double champion of the 19M games when he won the men’s slalom. Grinchin won the 600-meter title and shared the crown. - Sailer's performance overshadowed record-shattering four-man bobsled, runs by the-U.S., Italy and Switzerland. Switzerland swept the first two places in this four-heat event, which winds up Saturday, while the U 8. sledders came in third. With the championship to be decided by the best total time over four heats, the U.S. had a very' good chance, however, of overcoming a Swiss lead of less than one h&lf-SBCOBd* ’■ < Canada remained in the running for the Olympic hockey championship by posting its third victory in four games of the final round robin—a 6-to-2 decision over Sweden. The Swiss No. 1 bob posted the beat cumulative time of 2:35.19 on the dangerously icy Mt. Tofana run and the No. 1 U.S. sled driven by Art Tyler of Rochester, N.Y. chalked up a combined time of 2:35.62. Tyler was first to break the record with a run of 1:17.76. Minutes later, Italy's No. 2 bpb hurtled down the Course in a record which also lasted a few moments as Switzerland's No. 2 sled reeled off a 1:17.41 clocking. vThe U. S. No. 2 sled driven by James Bickford of Saranac Lake, N. Y., completed the run in 1:20.97. Sailer became the first man ever to sweep the giant slalom, slalom and downhill, three events which require widely different techniques. The handsome Austrian parlayed a combination of youth with mature judgment and skill with a dash of recklessness to beat his more experienced rivals. Sailer negotiated the course 3.5 seconds faster than runnerup Raymond Fellay of Switzerland. Austria picked up four more points when Anderl Molterer came in third 2:56.3 and the Swjss scored again as Roger Staub finished fourth 2:57.1. Germany’s Hanspeter Lanig was fifth 2:69.8 and
Gino Burrini of Italy placed sixth 3:02.5. At least eight of the 94 downhill competitors fell along the course made treacherous by ice. Including Chlaru Igaya of Japan, who was runnerup to Bailer in the slalom and who retired from the race after his spill today. Only one of fear Amejjcau entries completed the baihrdous race. Tinder, who voted with the Republican faction of • Governor , George N. Craig when he Was in the state senate, Bild: “The grand jury gave serious and deliberate consideration to all the facts. I see nothing that would warrant another grand jury Investigation." The jurors Thursday reported that they could find no conclusive evidence that state auditor Curtis Rardin solicited a bribe to vote, as a member of the state finance board, to transfer 370,000 from the state highway department to the Indiana toll road commission to finance a survey for a proposed north-south pay highway.. Therefore, the jurors refused to indict anyone, although Albert J. Wedeking, toll road commission director, charged that Rardin asked for cash on the line in Wedeking’s Claypool Hotel room in which no others were present Rardin said he was trying to trap Wedeking but admitted the effort was a failure. In Washington, Governor Craig said he still thought Rardin should resign, but the auditor had no comment except to say: The jurors named no names but administered a slight slap on the wrist to the governor and other state officials for concealing the bribe scandal for nine mop ths. The others “in the know" were Wedeking, state internal revenue commissioner Frank T. Millie, and state police superintendent Ar thur Jessup. One politico said: ’“Nobody got hurt.” That is not quite true. Democratic leaders, in this year’s campaign, plan to make toll road irregularities a major campaign issue, on the theory that where - there is so much money smoke there must be fire. They will not be checked by numerous antiCraig GOP chiefs. Dallas — The inhalation of gasoline fumes reacts on some people the same as alcohol. Trade In a Good Town Decatui
