SENATE G. 0. P. (CanUnasd from Figs One) would have rough sledding. It did. In fact, some senators protested so vigorously against the part that Holmes had allegedly played in a surplus tanker deal which became involved in the courts that the White House withdrew the appointment The senators’ opposition to Bowie is based on a difference in ideology. During their secret huddle with Dulles, both Bridges and Knowland sharply protested some of Bowie’s alleged beliefs. They particularly questioned unverified reports that Bowie favors recognition of Red China, the seating of that Communist country in the United Nations, and a slowdown of aid to Nationalist China. Bridges and Knowland, according to senate colleagues, said Dulles admitted that Bowie does not share the same philosophy as the secretary and Eisenhower. But Dulles argued that he “could control Bowie." Fire in his eyes, Bridges reportediy argued that it was the secretary’s ownbusiness if he wanted a man of opposing views in a lower echelon job at state. Bowie is currently chief of the department’s policy planning Ataff, However, he made it clear that when Dulles promotes such a man to a post requiring senate confirmation, he cannot expect them to share the responsibility of approving the choice. The ironical thing about the current feud is that both Bridges and Knowland spoke out strongly last week in defense of Dulles, when the secretary was in the hot seat over the controversial Life magazine “brink of wax” article that riled so rgany other legislators and foreign allies. O'NEAL IN RACE fContlnueU from One) 1. Operate state government for the public good and not for individual or personal gain of a few. 2. Solicit the aid, cooperation and active assistance of those tn city, town and county government to help solve mutual problems. 3: Work in harmony with the federal government as it applies to state levels. 4. Insist on strictest economy in state government. 5. Be fearless in efforts to rid government of graft and corruption by surrounding myself with honest employes.
